To my knowledge, all cases were / are produced this way.

No rocket sience is required to punch cut / form from a metel sheet. On the other hand a form of casting is used for the billet forming and may be some rolling too.

I know this is an older thread but wanted to add that I picked up a 277xxxx serial 1675 Pepsi GMT Master which equals a 1970 production year and it drove me nuts how the lower 4 o'clock CG was thinner than the top. I initially assumed it to be due to over polishing however when I started referencing the same 1970 production year on sites like HQ Milton, it became apparent that it was a common trait exclusively to this year. It's likely that the machining they used back then, was offset for a while until it was corrected the following serial production year.

Both the Crown Guards and the Lugs where hand done back in the Day So it’s entirely possible for one lug or CG to be thinner on even a unpolished example.
