What would you buy Rolex 116000 or Tudor BBB?
Hi guys. I have just joined this forum as I need a bit of advice...
I am looking at my first major watch purchase. I have narrowed my choice to: - Tudor Black Bay Blue (steel strap) - Rolex Oyster Perpetual 36mm 116000 Blue 3-6-9 dial (discontinued) I'm also considering the 2014 white grape and red grape options of the 116000. £3000 is pretty much my maximum and the new 39mm is a tad large for that type of watch IMO,so I have discounted it. I have small to medium wrist. Im looking at buying through a reputable grey dealer to get the best price. (any reccomendations?) I am a 30 year-old man. Should I go straight to rolex or get the black bay and save the cash? What do you guys think... Cheers Richard |

I like the Black Bay, but if you have a small/medium wrist you should try it on before you buy it. It wears big.

Whichever you prefer, or else you will want the one you didn't get.

Black Bay might be a bit big on your wrist. 116000 is just a simple classy watch that will never go out of style. My vote is for the Rolex

116000... imho I would go for the blue 36mm. The only reason I didn't go for it is because it has no date... for some no a big deal but for me I know I will kick myself later when I need the date function :D

I dont want a watch that screams Rolex. I like the understatedness of each. The tudor because its not a Rolex and the OP because it doesnt scream Rolex. Both very different. I may need to visit an AD to try each one on, but I dont have any intention of buying one from an AD at top prices though.
Currently own a Glycine Combat Sub Blue face / orange bezel. Nice watch. Sits flat on wrist which is a plus. |

For me I'd love to get another 116000; just a great watch. The Tudor is nice but it isn't a Rolex.

Like that model a lot, quite unusual, though I think I prefer the plain jane blue 3-6-9. :) |

If you like the 3-6-9, how about a 34mm air-king?
This one is from my local AD. |

I think the 36mm is a slightly more modern size. Not any better though. I'd settle for a 34mm for the right price. |

Yes I ended up getting a 36mm datejust myself.
I think you can get a 36mm explorer 1 for a good price? Have you searched the forum and contacted trusted sellers here? |

I just picked up a gently used BB blue bezel on the bracelet. For the purposes of a weekend watch when I don't want to wear my Panerai.
For the $$$ it is hard to beat BNIB. Used it is an absolute bargain. The watch is about as well finished as you can get. Not quite as nice as the new 6 digit Rolexes, but as nice if not nicer then the old 5 digit references. Brushing around the lugs and the chamfered finish is a nice touch that hearkens back to the old Rolex tool watch days. The Rolex DNA is obvious, especially when you look at the dial with the white gold surrounds. The domed effect of the crystal is a really nice touch as well creating a really neat effect in the sun when it hits the markers and matte dial. Only downside is the thickness. I don't really care as this is going to be a strictly casual watch but would have liked similar dimensions to the 114060 in the event it has to pull duty with a suit. Right now that job is covered nicely by my Royal Oak. Other minor gripe is the absence of a dive extension inside the clasp, even though I don't dive. Don't buy this if what you want is a Rolex.... They make a great classic watch. I have owned a bunch of them but for the most part I am kind of over them for different reasons, although a new SD may find its way back into my rotation post home renovations..... And if you want a good basic watch that will last a lifetime, you are pretty hard pressed to beat the original OP. But if you want an honest tough old school type sports watch, I can't think of anything as nice for the $$$ as the BB. It's kind of like what LaSalle was to Cadillac back in the day. Made by it's big brother, more affordable, but in no way lacking in quality whatsoever. |

tough one, visually I like the BB better, but there definitely is something about the Rolex name that would draw me in that direction. I'm also not one to want to "show off" or get a Rolex just to tell people I own a Rolex, but if I didn't already own a Rolex, I kinda feel like, simply put, I'd have to buy a Rolex over a Tudor. I think there's a reason it feels like 90%+ of people's first luxury watch is a Rolex, and the legacy that comes with the name is hard to overcome.
Also for me personally, I am a little hesitant to pull the trigger on a Tudor right now, while they're rolling out the inhouse movements. I have to think that will trickle down into all their models eventually as Swatch pulls all the ETA movements. Not sure how much the inhouse is an upgrade, but I'd also hate to spend that kind of money and maybe feel like my watch is the "old model" in like a year or two. |

116000 is a beautiful classic watch that will always fit any occasion. The BBB is terrific and a great watch but there's something special about the Rolex.
