Icon20 Guidance needed on choosing a Rolex

Hi

New to RF. And hoping to purchase my first Rolex in next 2-3 months.

Can't decide between SS sub and TT DJ II

I live in a suit 5 days a week. Weekends it mostly jeans and shirt. I like the practicality of the SS sub but not sure it is dressy enough for a suit. Thinking it might be more appropriate to use the DJ II with my suit and dress it down on weekends.

Would love to purchase both, but not in my budget. Treating myself for my 50th birthday.

Thanks for your input.

There are many on TRF that will tell you that a sports watch looks fine with a suit.

I am not one of those.

IMO, it's better to dress up jeans with a DJ than to dress down a suit with a SUB.

I would go DJII. So many nice options. Go smooth bezel and batons IMO

There's nothing not dressy about a SS Sub... most guys in suits don't wear Rolex's... and oh yea, it goes great with jeans, too!

You can't go wrong either way. Normally I'd say a Submariner but in your instance I'd say go with the DJ. Just a feeling.

DJII for now. Sub for retirement or when you can afford it.

A SS sub will look good no matter what you wear. It stands on it's own, as a classic timepiece. In fact you might have to consider buying better quality suits to go with it!

A Sub can pull off a suit pretty darn well and looks fabulous with jeans and a t shirt. If I were picking between the two based solely on how well it works with a suit, I would go DJII but for a great all around watch that can do it all, I would go with a Sub.

I think a Sub goes better with a suit than a DJII does with shorts/jeans

Any chance you can swing a TT sub? A little flash of 18k dresses up the sports watch for the boardroom. Perfect for a suit, kicks the jeans way up.

Different problems call for different Solitions. I own a TT bluesy but I'm now shopping for a polar Explorer II for my dress down watch. It's clean, utilitarian look speaks to me and doesn't scream Rolex.

My advise is to buy the Rolex you really want, not the one you think might fit your employer's or client's expectations. To thine own self be true!

Might I suggest a steel DJII? It has the ability to fit both suit and casual while not having gold on it. You might get tired of the gold and steel look.

I'm more of a fan of dressing down my DJ than dressing up my Sub. That said, I dress up my sub all the time!

First rolex, can't go wrong with a sub. Especially a 116610LN. It goes with anything.

Either will gather attention in a suit, more people know a Rolex Sub than a DJ, but both are well known, CEO's of many companies sport Sub's because of their heritage. A sub dresses up and down, I think a DJII does not do the dress down as well, just my opinion.

Chaps

One often reads that chaps who wear a Sub, wear it 5 days a week in an office environment wearing a suit.

I tried it once and never again. The Sub looks fine, even dainty in this age of 44 mm watches but the rotating bezel is so high that it constantly catches on the edge of the shirt cuff and sleeve of the suit. In other words it looks a mess.

The DJ on the other hand has a less prominant bezel and this problem does not exist.

To the OP, I would say this only, get thee to an AD and try both watches on your wrist when wearing your office attire and then go with your gut reaction.

I wears my Sub whilst touring abroad ( I am retired) and a 39mm Explorer when wearing a long sleeved shirt with a jacket. The Explorer is totally understated and perfect for the workplace as well as when going casual. Possibly you should look at it.

Regards

Mick

it's not like a DJII is particularly dressy. go with what you love.

I own both and if it had to be one it would be the sub hands down. I think it looks great with a suit and the bracelet is the best with the glidelock.

Maybe get the ND Sub as it's a little more subtle?

ND Sub, plus a quality leather strap to dress it up for suit days (like Everest). Just cant go wrong with it. DJ2 cant ever be sports / casual, while SUB can be casual and dressy.

Ideal y get both, but if cant, ND Sub is a better watch IMHO.

Have you considered an EXP-II 16570? It's a sporty watch, but with the fixed bezel it fits easily under a shirt cuff and has essentially the exact same profile as a 116200 DJ (except slightly larger). Black dial wears excellently with a suit. Give it a try--sounds like it'll be exactly what you're looking for.

When I turn up for the monthly Board Meeting (the only time I wear a suit), I wear my Sea Dweller and drive to the office in my old battered Land Rover Defender - it's my way of still being me, and not just a career suit.

If you can only justify/afford one nice watch, get the one you like the most and that best reflects who you are.

Is it a classic look? No. Am I a classic guy? No. Does anyone care? No.

Let's be clear, I should never give any fashion advice, but I do believe in being true to myself, and I hope that my colleagues and clients like that about me, they certainly seem to believe in me.
