I'm not trying to rain on his parade. The Hodinkee article and other images I've seen on the net of this particular watch show the 1947 date. I hope I'm wrong, but he has a right to know, especially if someone MAY have be taken advantage of. I meant no offense to anyone.

My thought is what would the rationale be behind faking this watch?? Just as transitional pieces can be a mish-mash of parts, it is plausible that Rolex ran out of 1947 coins when this watch was being assembled.

Seems quite obvious, it's celebrating the 150th anniversary. 1821-1971. When they bought the coins they likely got an array of years. Their bullion. They're all the same size and weight so they used what they had to make the watches. For all we know they could've used consecutive years of the coins to differentiate the watches since they were minted so long.
