1950's ?, I was hoping for a way of dating it more accurately, and have been told 20's/30's ?
As for the movement looking "strange"......??? |

Take a pic of the markings inside the caseback and the back of the case back. The crown appears to have been replaced. Dials in poor condition. If I remember correctly this is similar to the old gruen movements. I'd imagine its late 30s or 40's. The caseback could possibly help us nail down a further date and potentially a model, although I doubt there is a specific reference.

That movement looks strange, yes. The train bridge looks too squeeky clean compared to the rest of the movement that has oxidation from age. Also, Where it says Rolex on the ratchet wheel, that should be deeply engraved instead of printed black.

However, your movement and dial fonts do not look like the typical Aegler built movement decorations used in a Rolex Prince, or even a Gruen curvex watch, which were sister watches. Aegler made similar movements for other companies and so a drive gear and dial paint may not always indicate the actual maker of some watches. In my view this watch would need "watch forensics" to arrive at any absolutes.

The bridge, that is signed Rolex, looks new. The other bridges appear oxidized, so it would appear to be replaced.
The Rolex signature on the winding wheel looks unlike any others that I have seen in reference books. It appears to have been put on recently. The dial does not look correct for a watch of that era, I believe it is a redial. And no photos of case to look for Rolex marks. Given what is shown, I wouldn't buy it, and I am not very picky. Just looks like a generic 30's watch that has had Rolex written all over it. Last edited by MILGAUSS88; 20 August 2016 at 12:20 PM.. Reason: ...... |
