Snorkeling with a vintage Datejust?

Hi everyone,

I just had my '72' Datejust 1603 serviced by Rolex a few weeks ago and I was planning to wear it on vacation while in the Caribbean. I've already had a swim in the pool with it but would snorkelling be over doing it?

Thanks for your replies.

Given that it was recently serviced I'd assume all would be fine, but I would also file this in the "risk vs. reward" category. As in - is the reward actually worth the risk?

This. I wouldn't do it either to be honest.

If Rolex serviced it (i.e. an actual RSC), they would have replaced all the gaskets and pressure tested it to its rated depth. For snorkeling, I think you should be fine.

Yes watch was serviced by RSC. To which extend they tested it this I don't know. So age would be the factor and/or the fact that it has an acrylic crystal?

I would be more concerned about the strap/clasp failing than the watch itself failing.

yes for sure. this is also a problem with "sports" watches as well. here in the philippine islands which is a huge diving destination it is quite common to hear of watches being found in the water by local fishermen and shell divers. it's the vigorous flailing of the arms while swimming, snorkeling and scuba diving that causes the watches to become unlatched and fly off the wrists and many times the person isn't aware of it happening as they are so distracted by the activity. we still have that "sunken seadweller" a shell diver found a few years ago.

YES! When snorkel I dive maybe 10-12 ft. tops. If it was recently serviced it should be good to go...

It's like gambling, only do it if you can afford the loss. Pressure testing is good but it only means it past at that moment.
