Datejust Won't Wind?
I haven't posted on this web site in many years and I am in need of some advice before I have my 116233 DateJust looked at. The watch is in excellent shape and has worked flawlessly for about 10 years. I don't use an auto winder and only use the watch on weekends. So I have to manually set and wind before every weekend. It keeps excellent time and looks brand new.
I tried winding it up this past weekend and I felt something "click" while turning the crown. No matter how much I wind, the second hand wont move. I would like to avoid the full service and simply have the broken main spring replaced. Is this something that most watch repair centers can service easily? Any advice would be appreciated. Thank You! |

I would only recommend that it be serviced by a qualified workshop with a ROLEX spare parts account. That way you can be sure that the watch is repaired with spare parts and gets the proper testing. Even if it is just the mainspring, that is a fairly comprehensive service that requires disassembling the movement. All the gaskets along with the mainspring should also be replaced.

Simple repair if it is indeed the mainspring. It could possibly be a different part from what you describe. No way to be sure unless it's opened up.

Most likely the mainspring. Funny, I had a 36mm explorer I on my bench today with pretty much the same problem.
You didn't get a service in that decade, then I'd highly recommend one, mainspring is standard replacement during an RSC service |

Same thing happened to my 16610 after about the same amount of time. The mainspring had indeed broken.

From the sounds of it, you may be better off sending it off to RSC for a full service. After 10 years without service, it almost certain that other parts will probably need to be replaced. The Seals need to be replaced as well.

My V serial 116233 with the 3135 Movement has sprung its mainspring..!?!? - Kinda surprised ..but if the 10 year window is all you get from a rarely worn Rolex .. I guess that comes with the territory... Really..! Oh well.. So be it. Off to The German Watchmaker for a full service. - I may (or may not) skip the xtra $50.bux for polishing. ! It's not my daily...so I'll think about that..! Geeze.. First the crown, now the mainspring... UGH.....!!

Since the watch needs to be taken apart to replace the mainspring it doesn't make much sense to try and save a few bucks by not having anything else done.

Having the watch fully serviced while being repaired. As mentioned, there's no point in cutting costs while opened. The only question is whether or not to have it polished too, for the xtra 50.bux ...

Update..
Got my 'baby' back from service with The German Watchmaker in Yaletown..
Did a great job: New mainspring, gaskets, overhaul, refinished case and bracelet... Looks better than new, for a 10yr old watch... Couldn't be happier... along with some adjustments to my Tudor. Money well spent...! .\ Took me 1/2 hr to resize this pic off my 'Smart Phone..".. WTF..! Anyway.. Glad to have my grail back in service.!!
