5216R - Aquanaut Luce for Men?

A bit surprised to see this in the ladies collections given the size and the fact it’s the first annual calendar on an aquanaut, but somewhat understood given the color way.

If you were picking, would you put this piece in the men’s or women’s collection (no marketing or business perspective, purely based on the design whether it’s more for men or women).

It’s not the Luce branding that destroyed the watch. The Rainbow Luce has been seen on men’s wrist and it looks good although very pricey. The main issue with the 5261R is the damn dial and the colour. The dial with the moon phase at the top and the half cut 12 at the top is just ugly. The sub dials looked like they were crammed in the centre. There’s no cohesion at all. The colour is another disaster on its own. The 5990R has a really good blend of RG and blue while the 5261 looks like a blend of diarrhoea in person. Why did Patek introduce an annual calendar Aquanaut and caters it to women with the “Luce” branding is something that baffles me every single day since it’s release.

Personally I would have no problem choosing this piece based on dial colour and dial layout. It is obviously in the ladies rose gold colour rather than the gents but again not a problem. Unfortunately I wouldn’t chose it due to only 30m water resistance which I don’t consider enough.

I think it doesn't really matter where in the collection it sits. I tried this on recently and found it quite nice indeed.

Imo, those is a great reference for men. I personally love the denim color, and don't mind the moon phase at the top.

my wife loves it says the color is pretty. I'd take one on a different strap, and I don't get the 30m WR for an aquanaut

Wow. Any other thoughts on it? I don’t care either that it’s in the ladies collection, it has the size of a men’s watch and really it’s just the color way (and maybe the desire to market to women more for watches) that drove the decision with Patek. It’s a really nice piece, and I’m thinking about this one for my “next list”.

Didn’t even think to look at the WR spec, good point out. Totally agree, 30M on an aquanaut is just weird and too low. While it’s rated to 30M, most people say that’s enough for washing hands and not even enough to shower or swim with.

I didn't have a problem with the layout and spacing on the dial. It was legible to me at least. And considering I have an 8.1" wrist, I really did not have any issue with how it fit me. Yes, 30m is a little disappointing but not a deal breaker for me. If I had to nitpick, I would say I wish the strap didn't have the same colour as the dial -- would have preferred a little bit more contrast. But then, I really cannot imagine a better strap colour, to pair with the denim dial.

I like it a lot, it should be unisex timepiece not a lady timepiece.

I don't know what to make of this watch which is rare as I tend to know what I like and dislike, all black and white no grey kinda guy. My first thought was nice, then meh, now at a loss. Definitely like the color combo of rose gold and grey blue dial and strap. Dial layout is the issue for me if anything.

Don't like it - moonphase should be at the 6.

I see it as a unisex watch because of the size and design. Either could easily wear it.

Water resistance is poor but who would buy one and swim in it? Not me.

I was surprised to see it was aimed at women - Patek are often crass and slap on a few jewels for the girls!! - I put my name on the list as soon as it came out as I do not own an annual calendar watch only Perp Cals.

I really like the colour, the blue moon at the top but have yet to see one in the metal. Is the gold really diffferent in colour to the ‘male’ gold metal?

just don't get why it's not rated for 120m like the other aqua line up

I don't find the dial of this any less appealing than the dials of the 5990, 5740 or 5726. Aren't most of the PM Nautilus models rose gold? If this fits your wrist and you like it, who cares. This same gender issue plagued the AP 15450 for years until the 15500 became unavailable and then, suddenly, the 15450 became unisex.

my general experience is that men are more fascinated by the technical and skill aspects of watch making, while women care more about what the watch looks like and the brand. In fact when my wife wears her watches, its often not even the correct time.

Men are more likely to appreciate the annual calendar complication

Sorry for being pedantic but the 5216 is a minute repeater tourbillon retrograde PC.

The correct reference for the Aquanaut AC is 5261R. I am not a fan but my wife loves it.

The dial is giving me strong VC 56 day date vibes. Not a fan of the moonphase location

Oops, thanks for correction. Annoying that you can’t fix thread starting posts. Sometimes dyslexic
