Questions about pre-owned pricing at TS
I am still learning about the hobby, and in particular the nuances of the pre-owned market. I'm working on picking out an example of a 16570, and maybe a 14060m.
At trusted sellers (the big ones like Bob's, DavidSW, etc), it appears that pricing increases a few hundred bucks per manufacturing year for more recent examples, as evidenced by the warranty card stamp date. On a watch already out of warranty, does this make any sense? Do later examples of the same design hold value better on the secondary market if I ever decide to sell? Or should I just go for the lowest cost example of a particular reference, all else being equal (same movement, dial type, "iteration", etc). For example, the 3186 movement 16570; is it worth paying a premium for a 2011 over a 2006, 7, or 8? Second question: for recently discontinued watches, price seems to shoot up for a last year or two example. Is this value added on the secondary market? I'm all for buying a watch I love and intend to wear, however I have a collector's nature about me, and these kinds of minutia interest me. If the watch will hold that extra value, I don't mind paying the extra cost up front. |

Perhaps he's channeling Mr. Robinson? (obscure "The Graduate" reference)
I suspect that most of the pricing differences for late model otherwise indistinguishable models is due to condition. You could also ask the seller. That would be the best bet for an accurate response.

Answering these questions could take hours to discuss. Keep searching the forum for buying preowned and look in the vintage section for 16570 and 14060m. But usually the newer the year the price might be higher for multiple reasons. If you are looking for five digit pieces that you intend to wear regularly then look for condition, and completeness of the set. If history repeats, then the future resale price should track closely to what you paid or increase / adjust for inflation.

Thanks all, I decided to select examples that were older, but full set. Somewhat middle of the road for pricing. They're in the mail now!
