I will go on the waiting list for my other knee after I have had this one done, hopefully in about 6 months.
Good luck tomorrow Dave.

I have been taking cortisone shots for a few years, trying to put the replacement off while I can.
My doctor had mentioned rooster comb shots as well. I have not tried that.
I talked to a friend that had them and it has lasted 3 years. So I think I might give that a try during my next cortisone break, (You take them for 3 quarters and 4th quarter you are supposed to skip.)

If you are rich you can try platelet-rich plasma therapy.
Kobe Bryant used this method.

A big vote for Hemp Emu cream. And, unfortunately, percocet, from last night’s ER run. Have an appointment for Tuesday with orthopod, will try to move up to Monday. Expect a cortisone shot.

Best wishes to Dave on his knee replacement!

I tried celebrex because it helped me with a back problem twenty years ago. However, it has not helped my knee at all in twelve days. I switched to three Advils a few times a day, a hot shower, a heating pad. Nuthin’. Finding it tough to walk around and to sleep.

Going back to doctor for cortisone shot on Tuesday. Have read about voltaren, avocado-soybean pills. Ice packs? I don’t have swelling. Want to lose weight.

I know you guys are mostly not doctors, but may have had the experience.
A close friend thought he needed knee work... turns out he had a lower back nerve issue and the first guy he saw (the knee specialist) thought it was a knee issue. Buddy went for a second opinion and wound up with having a microdiscectomy to open a nerve passage in his back... all is well now.

Moral of the story... no matter how long you've been with your doc, a second opinion never hurts, and usually doesn't cost much.

Just my 2 shekels. I am not a physician.

They told me when it came to pain management it was much easier to manage it if you get in front of it so as soon as I told them I was at 3 or 4 on a scale of 1 to 10 they gave me some morphine. Of course I had a prescription for oxycodone once I got home.

Hang in there, I feel your pain. It will get better.

One of my best mates said to me to try and think of pain as weakness leaving the body. His advice didn’t work! Co- codomol will likely be your new best friend when you leave hospital.

Be sure to keep us updated and all the very best.

Make sure your Dr. prescribes something like this before you leave, assuming they don’t give you a motion machine. If not, buy it yourself. It got me off narcotics after three days after my last shoulder surgery.

Unreal how fast these products work for pain. Highly recommend, I feel like it works in like 15 seconds to relieve my pain. Good luck in your surgery’s this week and a fast recovery.

Keep us posted on your progress. Stay ahead of the pain with the pain meds. Feel better, Dave.

I called my original orthopedist on Wednesday, Friday and Monday (today), begging to see a doctor before my appointment tomorrow. They would not accommodate me. I called another orthopod, they saw me at 11am, X rayed, they gave me a cortisone shot. Less pain one hour later.

I am now retired and so are the doctors and dentists who treated me in my prime. I felt that if I had an emergency situation, these people would figure out how to accommodate me..

I saw an orthopod one time two weeks ago in South Florida, he doesn’t know me from Adam, but I called in distress on the Wednesday before Thanksgiving, the Friday after Thanksgiving and the Monday a few days later (today). I advised them that I had to go to the ER on Friday night and they gave me percocet. I was in great pain and couldn’t walk or sleep. No one would accommodate and see me on or near the days that I called. I would have seen any orthopod in this multi-physician office.

Is this the new normal in American medicine? I am lucky that I had dedicated physicians who showed up for me earlier in my life.

I ran into the same thing after moving from Northern California to LA a year or so ago. Up north I played hockey with my GP, my orthopedic surgeon, my chiropractor and my dentist. I could call them at any time on their direct cell phone line and get into see them within a couple of hours.

Now I don't even have these kind of doctors and have to start over. SUCKS

Glad you're home Dave.

The trick with these type of issues is work REAL HARD on the rehab. It's easy to get lazy, but the best and quickest results are all achieved by gritting your teeth and doing the work.

FWIW, I take turmeric as a supplement for inflammation (specifically as it has curcumin, which has potent anti-inflammatory effects). It unquestionably helps me with pain. It's not a miracle drug (as I don't think those exist), but it's a supplement with some clinical backing, a lot of empirical results, and relatively low risks.

Quote:
Curcumin is a natural anti-inflammatory drug. Numerous preclinical studies have demonstrated its beneficial effect on arthritis. Clinical trials focused on the treatment of knee osteoarthritis. In a clinical trial of turmeric extract in the treatment of knee osteoarthritis, turmeric extract inhibited inflammation and improved clinical symptoms, as well as reduced IL-1β and oxidative stress ...

Further, where as a lot of NSAIDS pose potential risks to the GI system, curcumin seems to be friendly to, and possibly even benefit the GI tract.

https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3097964/

It probably wont change your life, but it might be a useful tool to add to the arsenal of combined treatments?

I bought an arsenal of aids. Turmeric, chondrosine/hydroitine or something like that, CBD/emu oil, tylenol, advil, celebrex and voltaren ( not all at the same time).

My knee still hurts on evening one of my first cortisone shot, but much less than it did. Hoping it settles down. .

I feel bad for you guys. I had a total knee replacement on September 26th as an outpatient. Before I went home, I walked up and down a set of three steps. My dr shot some pain meds into the replacement during surgery. It lasted about three days. After that to this day, I haven't taken one single narcotic for pain management. I didn't have much. Day 4 post op was a little difficult but I pushed through it. After that I had a few spikes but they went away quickly. I did my PT and re-hab at home going by my dr's protocol. 8-10 times daily with ice for 40 minutes afterwards. Every day for three weeks. The following week was six times daily and riding an exercise bike for 10-20 minutes. Nine weeks out, I'm past 120 degrees ROM. The goal is 130. I keep working at it every day so I'll get there.

I know that exercise is everything for post-operative recovery. Congrats on your efforts and results!

For some of you, it may be worthwhile asking your orthopod about this.

Still in pain from it. Does seem like standard procedure after oral medication fails.
