Military guys and your watches...

I know there are a lot of military men who are on the forum. I was wondering what your watch of choice was as its as close to true tool watch users as you will find in today’s world. Merry Xmas to all here.

I wore a few different watches in my 21 years in the Army, however my wife bought me the Luminox pictured here in 2004. It never left my wrist for many years and multiple deployments. This watch can tell stories. I always picture this being the watch my son cherishes the most. Later in my career, my wife bought me a GMT Master II (Coke), which also saw its share of field time.

Not a military man myself but thank you to all current and former servicemen for your service to your respective countries.

A friend, former marine pilot now a medical rep has a 5 digit Blue TT Submariner for special occasions. Otherwise it’s the same Casio G-Shock he’s worn for years.

My luminox failed shortly after purchase from the nex in guantanamo. My suunto xlander which was issued equipment and made in finland(not china) has been beaten, smashed, dented and thrashed for 5 years and still beats strong until this day. The scars it tells

Semper Fi Commandopat.

I was in the Marine Corps for just over 5 years. Had a GMT master the majority of that. Honestly didn’t wear it much while working, I was in the air wing and we generally couldn’t wear them much in those cases, nor would you really want to with your arm crammed deep in aircraft engines. Got out and added a Exp II to go along with it. Still in the hunt for a SD4K and 14060 before too long.

Military guys and your watches...

Strange... my post vanished.

I didn’t think a photo while deployed in a conflict (hence being armed) was against the rules.

Anyway, wore a windup Marathon in the Balkans back in the 1990s. Wore a Seiko SKX009 in Kabul, and a Marathon SAR in Kandahar:

Now, its just this in retirement:

I know JLC and Luminox have SEAL watches with varying degrees of "official" endorsements but I believe most branches of the service and foreign services use G-Shocks unofficially. I'm going totally by hearsay, have one nephew in the Marines and a my wifes cousin was an Army Ranger.

I can tell you with guaranteed certainty, g shock for sure. Rugged, and certain models have a red backlight, for which if you ever used night vision goggles in your career you would understand why. Luminox is junk, the jlc model was just marketing hype with a semi endorsement from a west coast “team” that never used it but some guys got “samples”. jlc used that to their benefit so that they could bring sales back to there dying master compressor line.

We might get some hippies complaining about this military thread soon... hopefully no ones feelings have been hurt yet

During my 27.5 year Air Force career I wore many different watch brands. Initially Seiko and Casio for the most part. Then sprinkled in Hamilton and Benrus military issued watches. In 2001, about 4 years before I retired, I got my first Rolex, a TT GMT Master on a jubilee bracelet. After that first one I went on to buy a Coke GMT, 18238 Day Date, TT Blue Sub, TT Yachmaster, and 116610 Sub. Today, I only have the Blue Sub and TT Yachmaster left.

Thanks to all the military vets for your service. Cheers, Tim

If I didn't wear the issued and superb G1098 watch made by CWC, it was my first "good" watch which was a Tag Diver.

Not in US military, but on military contracts in Iran, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE. 1680 sub always on wrist, even down to 200ft. in Persian Gulf.
Bought it in Tehran, 1978 for $700.00 and sold it last year for $14,000.00.
Now loving my YM. Does everything the sub does, just attracts barracudas better.

When I was active duty I mostly wore an IWC chronograph and a Citizen Aqualand.
They got the job done.
I got my Rolex as a present for getting out.
Now my off the grid 3rd world field watch is a Hamilton hand wind on a NATO.
Under the radar, non attention drawing, inexpensive, but still has some WIS street cred.
I’m wearing it today on the dangerous Philly Main Line.

It was my Sub. Hands down. I loved the simplicity of the 114060 and how easy it was to wear. The bezel was a great impromptu timer and tackled everything I needed.

Cheers to my fellow vets for a great 2020!

Back in '66 I did R&R from RVN and bought my first watch at the China Fleet Club in Hong Kong. I'd always admired Rolex watches even back then but on a Lance Corporals pay I certainly couldn't afford one. So a Seiko dive watch was the choice within my means. I don't recall the model but it was very special to me due to where I purchased it. Anyway I ended up losing it somehow. Now I own a Rolex bluesy and several much more expensive watches but still remember that Seiko with fondness.

While in I-Corps at Quang Tri in 1971, I missed a 5513 at a PX because they would not hold it with deposit of $75 for the $90 watch.
The China Fleet Club in Hong Kong had a red 1680, which I purchased along with 4 crystals. A Marine friend had encouraged a Rolex based on hard service wear in combat.
Special Forces members assigned to MACVSOG tended to wear Rolex watches as a personal choice in part because of durability under tough conditions. References chosen were tool watch examples as the 1675, 5513-5512, and 1680 Submariners. The 1680 has lasted 50 years, with the last crystal in place. It survived combat, night parachute
drops, scuba operations, and abuse that would eliminate other watches at the time.

Nice to see this thread got a resurrection. In my earlier days with lots of deployments and field work, I wore a Casio Pathfinder most of the time. Great watch! Still works.

Once I moved to the office later on, I wore my Sub most of the time.

Suunto which was issued to me in 2006 has taken an absolute beating and is currently enjoying some long overdue retirement in the safe.
