I think the Olympics is going to be a binary decision only. If this persists they will be cancelled.

This is true. Also in poor countries where people have little to no access to health care or nourishment.

Unfortunately the US CDC essentially admits the virus cannot be contained.

The issue is that it so easily spread and people who aren't symptomatic in the least can be super spreaders leaving a trail of infection in their wake...and they don't even know it.

So there will be a lot of sickness and massive strain on the healthcare network.

It will be interesting to see how quarantines and such are handled in western countries as China is completely different. The population is conditioned to 100% comply with governmental orders, so they do so. People in the west may have a different attitude towards that....hopefully we don't have to find out.

I think instead of panicking (extreme #1) or dismissively marginalizing the threat (extreme #2)....Prepare to have easy access to food and supplies be constrained. Either get ready or you might wish you did.

So today’s numbers out of China just got published. Deaths have declined dramatically to just 52. New cases also down to 406. This is very encouraging. The WHO did say it had peaked around February 2nd. Maybe we are going to be okay.

A book written in 1981 by Dean Koontz titled THE EYES OF DARKNESS predicted this corona virus to occur in 2020. It was named wuhan 400 in the book.

Actually it was named Gorki-400 and later (1989) re-named to Wuhan-400.

Coincidental nomenclature but far from a prediction. That's been all over the news lately and was quickly debunked.

Finding similarities in life after two things vaguely tie together doesn't make it a prediction.

If you're going to try to lighten the mood, you should have said "ice hockey" because regular field hockey -which a lot of people call hockey- is on the list.

The swine flu during the first year of the 2009-2010 H1N1 pandemic, 20% of the population caught it - far higher than the COVID-19. H1N1 death rate was just 0.02 percent but COVID-19 is currently above 2%.

That is getting people’s attention.

the Coronavirus outbreak thread

Last year was comparable in terms of population and mortality rate.

However that is a matter of debate since WHO depends upon self-reported data and the many types of flu - some types are very mild while others are more severe.

the Coronavirus outbreak thread

I work in a medical facility and we have commercial Lysol which kills the SARS coronavirus. Been on the label for years.

I just snapped a pic of a can on my desk.

We in Japan believe that it is being under reported at least X 10 by the Chinese government.

Services at my church have been cancelled. Graduation ceremonies cancelled or shortened. Scheduled company drinking parties cancelled.

Because we can't trust what is coming out of China Paul. They have zero credibility.

Maybe it is or maybe it isn't. That's the point, the unknown. The fact that we can't trust the numbers out of China as everyone keeps saying the data is underreported and far worse. So many economies rely on China, like it or not. Also Swine flu death rate (0.01-0.08%) far lower than Coronavirus (2-3%).

H1N1 is the flu. I think it specifically refers to Swine Flu, but it is I believe it is also generic for flu in general.
I’m not a medical guy, at all, so feel free to correct my interpretation if this is your profession.

Ok, just looked at this a little closer online.
Here’s a quick synopsis:
“Flu (influenza) viruses are divided into four broad categories: influenza A, B, C or D. Influenza A is the most common type. H1N1 flu is a subtype of influenza A.”

I suspect by then that the events will be deserted.

If it is not outright called off, rescheduled or moved.

Damn shame as a lot of money and resources have gone into the venues.

Nobody is excited or looking forward to having them here anymore.

So as far as you’re concerned you are expecting full blown global panic? I mean economies destroyed, jobs lost, Olympics canceled and pure pandemonium? Basically global meltdown?

This post has really caught my eye. My wife and I have travel plans to Tokyo for the second week of April, so we've been watching State Department alerts. Japan was recently raised from level 1 to level 2. I'm 71 years old and she's 68 which could put us at higher risk. We've decided to cancel our plans and from what you've said above, I don't think you would disagree. It's terribly disappointing. Good luck and fingers crossed that you don't all get it.
