Follow AD'S Game vs Go Grey

In my country there are less than 10 ADs, but they all owned by one big group.

No chance at all to get what you want. For sport models, you need to make USD 200k purchase history of other watch brands.

So if you want the model that you want, better you go Grey....

Regards,

Regards,
You really have to wonder if it’s better to romance the AD (buy stuff you don’t really want) or bite the bullet and just buy gray?

Depending on the model (e.g., Explorer) it might be cheaper to buy gray market and have the years of enjoyment versus waiting 3 to 4 years on some imaginary waiting list.

How many threads of this nature are going to be made?

It varies greatly and ultimately it’s personal choice, if you want a hot piece you have to wait/won’t get it simple as that it’s the norm now.

I’m not condoning some of the games from the ADs I see on here but at the same time hearing all the victim stories and how they are the devil is getting boring, they have an allocation and choices to make.

I have had luck here with my AD, but there are quite a few near me.

I am thinking it will all depend on your purchase history and exactly what ref you are looking for? If someone is a first time buyer and wants a TT DJ, I would try to go AD. If they wanted a Panda Daytona as their first purchase.....better be prepared go grey if you actually want to own that piece!

I went to a jeweller who has been established for 30 years and bought a “second hand” watch that was 4 days old - lol. Is that going grey? Of course it is, but if you pick your model, it makes sense because some of the premiums are next to nothing now. Not much over 10% premium and I just walked in and bought it - got the original purchase receipt from the AD etc as well, every bit of paper and tag and I’ve only lost 4 days of warranty.

Give it 18 months and the list price will have risen by the premium I paid. At least this way I have a watch and haven’t wasted hours or days of time. Depends what watch you want, what the premium is and what value you put on your time.

Neither.

Buy a like new previously owned 5-digit model from a trusted seller and send it to an RSC for an overhaul and Rolex warranty.

Yep if you absolutely need a Rolex this is best. Especially if you want a GMT. Rolex makes a good product but not nearly worth any of the two pole options.

It’s missing the neither option, tens of thousands of NIB for sale by various greys, ignore both for a few months and availability at AD should be better by spring

I'm doing neither. Waiting until I can buy at MSRP from AD. It's only a watch

Go grey, in most cases it will make the most economic sense if you want hyped pieces.

If you cannot buy new from an AD, buy one on the used market. Used prices are softening so not as tough a decision as it was.

No local AD here and I’ve tried with two out of town with no luck so if I want a watch I contact my trusted re-seller friends here on TRF

I would go CPO. If your going to pay jacked up prices might as well have the backing of the big house.

I think you'd be better off buying a used watch from a trusted seller and paying an RSC $750 for a complete overhaul and a two year Rolex warranty.

Essentially the same big house backing as CPO, but much cheaper.

I have only ever bought 2 watches grey above SRP. I have since moved on from both, selling them for basically what I paid for them and have been buying from my AD ever since. I am lucky that I get allocated maybe 2 sports models a year. No complaints at all!

I would not be surprised if half these threads are started by grey dealers trying to convince folks they shouldn’t even bother going into the AD.

It's totally situation dependent, IMO.

If you are talking about a few thousand dollar premium versus waiting a few years, that's a big difference compared to say a ten or twenty thousand dollar premium.

Then there's how much someone really wants the watch. I was fine paying a small premium for my first Rolex, although I don't think I would do it for a second Rolex, if I ever purchase another. But that's not to say what works for me works for someone else!

It is about the watches. If the only avenue to purchase is through the Grey market then do your research and get the best price for the best example possible.

Do normal folks live in Dubai? I though it was all Instagram models who get to fly around the world in private jets! And when it comes to Rolex, just stroll down to one of the local ADs - among the largest and best stocked in the world.
