Or it seems strange that you can't see the difference.

Face to face vs relative obscurity. But I do agree that some people on social media can often confuse virtual friends with real friends.

Who defines what a real friend is?

I’ve met dozens of folks from this site.

I keep in touch with at least a dozen regularly. One, got me through my divorce. I speak to him nearly every day.

In this evolving world, all types of relationships are evolving too.

I’m blessed in that I’ve got various groups of friends from different stages of my life, that I still keep in touch with. Yet some of the folks I’ve met here have evolved to be some of the best friends I’ve got.

And I’m thrilled to know that I’m developing new friendships daily. From trf.

Personally, I always respond nicely when somebody compliments my watch. Some other items (outerwear, often) garner me random compliments also. If the person has interest in a conversation, I'll happily engage them.

My experience as the giver of the compliment has been less positive. It's frustrating to deal with members here (not you) who view themselves as the world's foremost expert on everything, because of course they'll assume there's something wrong with me, whereas the actual smartest people are curious, e.g., "Oh wow, that's surprising to hear -- how did you arrive at that conclusion?"

My opinion was colored by living in East Asia for years. That part of the world is intensely competitive, status oriented (and watches are key tools for projecting status), hierarchical, and emotionally repressed (suicides are a big problem). The society was lower-trust than the US -- there's a big divide between insiders (friends, family, business partners) and outsiders (strangers). I complimented a few folks' watches and they responded bizarrely -- one dude even laughed maniacally at me. My sense is that, as globalization continues, the US is also becoming a lower trust society. Hence my initial advice to the OP to skip out on the compliments. But I admit my views on the topic were colored by my experiences in a very different culture where friendliness to strangers is less common. But even East Asia had variation -- for example, I always found the Taiwanese very friendly to strangers.

I'm still awaiting a reply from my best friend in Kenya who will be depositing a gazillion UK pounds into my account as soon as the second instalment of my "helping him out" payment has cleared. He is a friend indeed. I am so lucky.

Fingers crossed.

I'm sure it's just a matter of time.

Oh, and by the way, when it does enter into your account, I've been having a few setbacks lately and was wondering.......

I usually walk up, shake the person vigorously and exclaim "Cool Watch Bruh"

Truly everyone enjoys a compliment now and again. Whether it be their watch, new car or a woman with stunning eyes.

It never hurts to be nice to a stranger.

I've always been a conversationalist, sometimes to my own demerit.

Also always been a flirt (I said flirt, not cheater!!) my entire life.

HA! I'm sure it wasn't you, kind sir!

I was living in FL (panhandle) at the time. Dude just gave an off-putting vibe.

I just read through the thread... damn, what a rollercoaster!

I was at a kids soccer game and the guy next to me was wearing an RM 11. he saw me notice it and i quietly said nice watch. I feel like he gave me the look of, “ don’t tell my wife how much this cost” . I almost never say anything but RMs a bit out of the ordinary.

How do you let someone know you like their watch?

Really? If that’s the case post screenshots of the messages that you apparently have and have been referencing throughout this thread and an earlier one that I didn’t post. I’m not going to say I may not have missed something. It could happen.

Until they are provided you’re the liar in my book.

So does you being done with me mean I never have to expect another unsolicited PM from you? If that’s the case today was a solid win.

Thanks!!

Yet another who can’t quit me!

I have said my peace and will not break my code of posting PM’s to open forum. I stand by open invite for a mod to look at my PM’s or if I need send the context to them.

I like a strong repartee with honorable people but this is not that. Color me done with you!

I have more honor in my big toe than you have in your entire body. If you want to question that please take an unbiased look at my posts and then yours.

I also have no idea how you’re still here because I’m 99% sure you’re a previously banned member that started a new account.

I’d presume to say previously banned for the same obnoxious behavior you have presented during your new tenure here.

I have not seen you post a single comment that really aligns with what the forum is. I will say I have trouble keeping my opinion from getting out of hand as well. That said I still try to treat people well no matter their stance in life.

By your obvious decisions to try to continue discussions (that you agree with or not) through private messages shows your lack of honor and cowardice IMO.

I’m just responding to your comments that have changed since I first read them. Seems you continuing to send me unsolicited PM’s would suggest you can’t quit me. Not the other way around.

I comment when I feel appropriate. Was picking up my new eye glasses a week or two ago and noticed the owner's watch. Commented. Turned out his Breittling was a gift, and had a good back story. He was happy to tell it.

Sometimes it's the little things. Like being polite.

I have had mixed success with this over the years. Unless I see something really unique or special these days, I usually let it slide and don't comment.

Most of the time, the person just bought a piece of jewelry in my experience and is not a WIS.

It's hard to look away sometimes.

Especially when 3 of my favorite members have been dumped on this entire thread.

You, Goat, and Ferry didn't deserve half the shade thrown your way.

Got two compliments on the car today.

One was a thumbs up driving through a parking lot. The other was a kid that stammered out “nice car”. I talked to the kid for a few minutes.

Both were nice gestures on their part. That’s it. Simple really. It was just a nice moment.

Sorry for the humble brag. I can’t help myself.

100% I consider you a friend. And I look forward to meeting you too someday. The phone calls are real. The friendship is real.

You always have a place to stay in my home. I greatly look forward to it.

A magnificent beast of a car. Best driving car Ive ever driven. Not the sexiest by any means. But the room, the comfort, the sound and the feel, this is quickly becoming a favorite. Shocking at his nicely a car of this size can handle.
