I bought my first Rolex in the ‘70’s. I never heard of any of these nicknames until this forum came up on a google search about ten years ago.

TRFers are a tiny minority of Rolex owners. I’m not sure not knowing obscure watch slang makes one a bafoon [sic].

:

Thought you’d say he threw a quarter plate at you then bench press you then cram you in the bicep curl and bend you and make you humble.

But glad he didn’t. This was better.

He did that the next day when he wore a Datejust and I said nice Datejust and he responded it’s a Rolex man…then I called him a bafoon, not under my breath this time.

Situational dependent. In the right setting to the right person to whom I have chatted with, I have no problem complimenting them on their watch. If people are around or it's a public setting, it's probably best not to say anything. Some people may want to fly under the radar and their privacy should be respected.

Maybe he got the watch before the silly nickname was made up and pushed on the unfortunate timepiece.

I commented on a customers watch one day and said 'I like your Sub" and he corrected me and said "It's an Oyster". And proceeded to show it to me.

I was never a big Rolex fan at the time but it looked real nice so about a week later I bought a Seadweller.

So I guess it worked out well.

At the hotel lobby bar last night, eating dinner with a buddy.

Some dude notices my watch and strikes up a convo. He was wearing a black Daytona. His smoke show daughter was wearing a TT DJ.

We talk for about 30 minutes. Exchanged contact info and connected on LinkedIn. My guess is we will do some type of business together in the future.

Networking is the lifeblood of business. Nothing like a common interest to start a conversation.

And being nice is just so easy. So incredibly easy.

Last time I complimented someone on their watch it went like this...

Hey, nice watch! What did that cost?
He replied, About three fiddy..

I then realized I was talking to the Loch Ness Monster!

It depends on the context you both are in. Mpstly I will be like this

"Hey, I just wanted to say that I really like your watch! It looks great on you."

This shows that you appreciate their style and fashion sense without coming across as awkward or impolite. Additionally, if you know the brand or model of the watch, you could add something like "That's a really nice brand/model watch you have there!" to show that you notice the details and appreciate the quality :)

I generally do not feel comfortable when a total stranger says anything about a watch I am wearing in a public setting. You never know who they are or who else could be given a heads up. I may compliment someone's watch in a more one on one private setting or among mutual friends where it seems appropriate to me.
