Consolidate into Pepsi Meteorite 126719BLRO?
The past few months I've been REALLY itching for a precious metal piece, but I don't know if I can ever bring myself (at least not for years) to drop that much on a single watch. However, I could consolidate multiple watches into a dream piece. I likely would have to put a little cash with it.
It's tough to decide because I've been fortunate to get a nice rotation with good variety. Would you trade/sell into buying... 126710BLRO (Pepsi ceramic) with both jubilee and Oyster bracelets 126610LV (Starbucks sub) 124270 (current Explorer 1) Cellini 5115/8 (older small model in yellow gold) For a 126719BLRO with meteorite dial? I've had that watch in the back of my mind for quite some time, and they've come down substantially in price. Sadly, that also means that my stainless pieces have, too. I think the Pepsi meteorite would keep its value better than my stainless watches, so in time--if I ever became sick of it (how could I?!), then my money would be safer parked in it as I could more easily turn that into another precious metal watch or even a collection of stainless watches likely equal to or greater than those I traded into it. In 20 years, I think this trade would make more sense than having kept it, but I've been wrong about things before. This trade would leave me with that being my only Rolex for now. I'd have a Tudor Prince Oysterdate (smaller DJ style), Tudor Mini-Sub, and a Submariner homage from Ginault for when I need to "go under the radar" or wear a beater watch. I like having variety in my collection, but I think I could enjoy more having a super heavy-hitter piece. If I had the meteorite Pepsi, I wouldn't miss my stainless Pepsi aside from sentimental value (my wedding watch and other memories), and the Sub would be so sorely missed (a special purchase at retail on vacation). The Explorer is nice and easy to wear anywhere without worries, but I don't honestly have a ton of attachment to it. The Cellini was my first Rolex I bought myself for college graduation. I think I might would find myself trying to sell some other things and keep the Sub with it, but I'm not sure. I do wonder how this would affect my relationship with the two ADs I got these watches from, especially whom I got the Pepsi from back nearly 4 years ago as they seem to be be adverse to flippers. However, with how the market is turning, maybe things will get back to where I feel more like a customer than a suitor trying to court them. My questions to you guys: 1.) Would you feel comfortable and enjoy wearing the Pepsi meteorite daily or at least very often? I live somewhere that I don't worry much about crime and people don't notice watches. 2.) Would you do this consolidation, or would you just enjoy the collection I have? |

You’d be giving up too much for one watch. If anything, I’d give up one BLRO, the 124270 and the Cellini.

Do you think you have to sell 4 watches and then add cash too?

all great, the meteorite Gmt is very special, much more than you would think on the internet. in person the dial is mesmerizing, the tone of the white gold is awesome, the feel of the weight, it all works.
make -your- own decision in the end.

I was lucky enough to score a GMT meteorite from my AD last month after a 2 year wait, and I absolutely love it. God willing, it is definitely staying in my permanent collection.
That said, I would not make that trade in your shoes. You have two fantastic pieces in a SS Pepsi (and with BOTH bracelet options) and the Sub LV. If you went to only one Rolex, I think you'd regret it. Also, if you are only going to have one PM piece, I would suggest either YG or RG. I looooove WG too, but if I only had one, it would be YG. For me, I only went WG after YG. On a side note, selling a watch you bought 4 years ago does not make you a flipper. And to answer your other question, yes, I could daily the GMT meteorite. It is not flashy. |

Keep the Sub, trade the rest with cash toward the meteorite dial. You don’t need a SS Pepsi and a WG one, the SS will collect dust.

I wouldn’t personally. I love the meteorite GMT, but you definitely have a lot more variety and versatility with what you have. The standard GMT although not PM is not a bad watch by any means. For having to trade them all just to have the one I would just enjoy what you have.

I’m all for selling less special pieces for BIG BOYS. I sold 5 SS models for my Platona. I’m not the biggest fan of that meteor Pepsi so I wouldn’t BUT if its a big one for you then absolutely

Seems like a lot to give up, but the BLRO meteorite is quite a piece.
If you do it - I'd love to buy the Oyster bracelet - bought my BLRO on Jubilee and not having much luck sourcing an Oyster... |

100% yes
Sometimes less is more, and in this case one big f off watch is better than the others combined. That, and I just think the sub with green bezel isn't a good look. |

No way - especially as I like the SubLV and the SS BLRO WAY better. Just don’t get the meteorite dials. 99% of the population won’t even know it is PM, just a watch with a white rock on the dial.

To each their own, I think LV is way better looking than a rock watch!

if those were my watches and trading was my only option to get into PM, i'd sell everything but the BLRO and put the proceeds towards a complementary PM piece. maybe a WG sub, DD40, or PM Daytona.
but i definitely wouldn't do the trade you propose. good luck. keep us posted. |

Thank you all for your responses so far. I think it will be very tough to work out not selling the Starbucks in the trade, so in your votes, please consider it as though I was getting rid of it, too.

For me I would say watches that were part of marriage, childbirth, major birthdays or the like should be kept whenever possible….
“This is the watch I wore when I married your mother” “I had this watch on at the hospital the day you were born” “On my 40th birthday I gifted this watch to myself, and I’ve been holding onto it for you ever since” I’m hopeful that I’ll be able to pass on a watch to the next generation with a story that sounds something like this. To me this seems more special than anything else, PM or otherwise. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

This is a tough decision. Going SS => precious metal is completely different. The look of meteorite is simply amazing in person, not to mention the weight on WG is almost 2x SS. Before you pull the trigger, I suggest you see it in person and try it on.

I'd do it...
I wear my Meteorite Pepsi on a nearly daily basis. No one notices it so I wouldn't worry about it being too flashy (then again I don't hang around any watch people). I have several precious metal watches and I can tell you that once you go PM you don't want to go back to measly steel (I know that sounds pompous so my apologies). Go big as you only have one life.
p.s. The whole notion that watches with special memories should not be sold is overrated. Once you stare into the pepsi's mesmerizing Widmanstätten pattern that will make you forget the other watch memories. |
