My daughter still bugs me for not naming her Vanessa, honest. She's 21 now and once-in-a-while, this subject comes up.

Just wondering, are you a Rolex watchmaker? I ask because I had one of my son's friends show interest in becoming a watchmaker, and is looking for schools/apprenticeships. Any ideas?

I have also purchased a watch,wifes TTOP, over the phone from a AD (in NH when I was living in NJ) for my wife,never even went in the store before.I think is like the old "Rolex will not allow us to discount from list price but we can do a "trade in"(aka; fantasy trade)".

Some are not turning down a sale over phone.I think they just hide it from the Rolex police when they come inspect the books and phone bills.

You're welcome! Yes I am a watchmaker, trained in Belgium (3 years), Switzerland (for ETA), and Pennsylvania (for Rolex).

Thank you for asking about watchmaking schools, and please encourage any person, who doesn't really know what to do professionally with todays uncertainties on the job market, to consider watchmaking. It is an awesome job, with great job security, and OK money...

In the USA there are 4 WOSTEP-based schools (Watchmakers Of Switzerland Training and Educational Program). They all have the 2 year program, which will graduate you as a watchmaker. With each of these schools you can request an application. Most of the tuition is "sponsored" by Rolex. Although I don't know exactly how that works. All programs accept 12 students a year, so they can give each and every student the necessary attention required.

With regard to quicksetting the date on an M-series GMT II: I am not finding that in my Owner's Manual. Where can I learn that trick?

With regard to becoming a watchmaker: Do you have to have exceptionally steady hands?

The quick-set on a GMT only works by moving the (12) hour-hand forward in the first crown-pulled-out position. Unfortunately there isn't a "real" quickset on those.

My hands are exceptionally steady... but I do know some watchmakers that have some difficulties with that. So it is possible to be a watchmaker with (a little) shaky hands, but if you want to be as good as I am, it's better if your hands are steady No seriously, it helps when you're steady!

Great post but you got it wrong with all rolexs have quickset date as the new GMT-IIc does not have quickset date. Also yes this should be a sticky.

Hi Vanessa,

I edited your quote with an "XX" since, imho, it's not important who said what and how often.

Anyway, for the exact above reason highlighted in bold, personally I believe this would be very helpful information if added to the Rolex FAQ's.

Ideally (hopefully?), the FAQ's is the place for new members (or older ones, just wanting to refresh things) to find general info about Rolex watches.

I didn't mean that every Rolex has quickset... I just said that any Rolex with a quickset can be set on whatever time of day. I'm sorry if some people misinterpretted that!

Vanessa, a great post and one that needs to be made available to all. However, I wanted it saved on my flash drive along with the TRF Rolex facts by RogerF, so I simply made it part of that document, citing you as the author and retaining the green font.

Nevertheless...Orchi has these to ask...n hopefully Orchi or perhaps others could learn more from here...

1. Orchi won't mind to spent the cost of service by any relevant RSC in USA for watches purchased from various parties there under the Sellers' names...before the watches are shipped to Malaysia for Orchi.

Upon its arrival...would the RSC service warranty on the watch...be valid or transferable to Orchi's name...?

2. On Rolex with manual winding movement...is it possible to over wound it forcefully...thus rendering the main drive spring or the relevant part to break...?

Please advise...

Yes Orchi, the service warranty is made out to the person owning the watch at the moment the watch is send in for service. So, if you send in the watch, the warranty paper has your name on it.

And yes again on overwinding a manual wind watch. When you feel the crown stop; STOP turning or trying to turn! You can definately break the mainspring if you try to tweak it a little more.

I guess you move enough!
No, my point on that one was that some people complain their watch stops while they wear it, and it's usually because they were very incactive for a period of time. Like some people that work on a desk 8 hours a day and don't move their left arm, except when they reach over to answer the phone... Or truck drivers that have their hands on the stearing wheel 14 hours a day... Or people that became bedridden, or ended up in a wheelchair, all of those can be examples of people "wearing" the watch every single day, yet they don't move enough to keep the watch wound.

Yes, some do but it is against Rolex policy. AD's can get into trouble and lose their AD status for doing such things. As many of us have figured out, there are ways around it.
