I currently have a black 42mm Explorer 2. I'm thinking about adding a 36mm Date-Just (blue stick, jubilee bracelet, smooth bezel, roulette wheel date) so I'd have one sports model and one dressier. Or trading the Explorer 2 for a Sea-Dweller 4000. So basically two really nice ones or one grail-esq model. Any thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated.

Possible datejust 41 in steel next year if you can wait. You will be underwhelmed with 36mm going from 42mm explorer 2. I like swapping the explorer for a sea dweller and waiting on new datejust model. I would look to get the sea dweller preowned as they lose a lot of value compared to subs.

You picked right up on my DJ concern.....They are so classic, but I'm worried that 36 will be a little small. A friend of mine picked up a YM a year ago and his DJ hasn't seen any wrist-time since. The longer I'm around here the more I feel like 39-40mm is the sweet spot.

36mm is fine if you have 7inch or smaller wrists. Any bigger and it looks a bit off. Would not matter much in your case if you are ok with the 42mm explorer 2 you will have a hard time being ok with 36mm unless you are ready to commit to that size.

I'd go with the sd4k. But if not try the op line they are 39 mm and dressier.

Yes, the DJ is smaller, it's 36mm, but mine with the fluted bezel wears beautifully. I think the classic, timeless DateJust can hold it's own against any timepiece out there. And I've never been a fan of the SeaDweller, or the DeepSea for that matter; just over-engineered Submariners, IMO

That's a great question? I really have no idea as I've never worn a 36mm watch. I just know every time I see one they look amazing. I've tried then on at the AD and they look great. My biggest fear is I end up with a 42 that's a little too big and a 36 that's a little too small.

I love the Milgauss, AirKing, Explorer and 39mm OP's, so any of those would be a nice companion to the Explorer 2.

Going from the Exp II to a 36mm DJ is quite the jump. For me, the DJ would really seem tiny and would be a no go particularly when wearing the Exp II in rotation. You may not experience that, but I definitely did when I owned a 36mm DJ years ago and rotating it and other 40mm Rolex models. It did not last long. Loved looking at it in general, but not on my wrist.

That's kind of what I was afraid of. Thanks for sharing. I've also considered flipping the Explorer 2 for a Submariner, then adding a 36mm DJ or a 39mm OP. Just so the gap isn't so large. 42 to 36 is almost the biggest gap in the Rolex lineup.

When you say you're thinking about adding a DJ to go with your EXP2, have you tried one on? And the same goes for the SDc.

I personally think you need to establish what it is you truly want and then go after it. It sounds to me like that's not really solid yet. If you buy or trade now, you're just going to end up flipping down the road.

36mm 16014 (which has narrower lugs than the 6 digit versions) on a 7.25 - 7.5 in wrist. The fluted bezel makes it wear bigger and as a dress watch the size is absolutely fine. Go with what you like, but IMO two watches are better than one!

I like the idea of 2 over 1 obviously but if the SD is a real grail type then I'd trade for it. If not really, then no.

If you like the large size of the ExpII, then adding a DJII or DJ41 won't be a shock to you, as you're already conditioned to the larger size. I think the ExpII wears large for 42mm, so the disparity between that and a 36mm DJ would be pretty large.

Actually putting the Explorer 2 in a FedEx box to flip would be really hard. At times it feels huge though. I love everything about it otherwise. I can't help but think there's a reason dang near every sports model is 40mm. In my opinion the SD4K is the best model in the lineup.
