Explorer 2's Future

Seems like model changes are coming more frequently across the Rolex lineup of late. The current model Explorer 2 has been around since 2011. Based on that, what changes do you think might be in store for the Explorer 2? The most popular on TRF seems to be a move back to 40mm. Any outside the box thoughts? Precious metal version? Two-tone? New dial color?

I'd put decent money on a return to the original bezel style.

Isn’t it time for the “ceramic treatment” for the Expl. II?

I think version of EXP2 in 40mm will drive a lot more sales. Personally I am not crazy about ceramic touch BUT is steel 24 hr bezel is moveable, that will be a plus.

Updated movement. That's it.

The size won't change; it helps differentiate it from the GMT.

I'd be interested in seeing a brushed grey ceramic insert that has the same color and shimmer as SS.

Sounds like a nice GMTIII. ;-)

The entire point of the Explorer II was that it had a more durable bezel than the GMT, for slamming into rocks and whatnot. A ceramic bezel, which can crack and break, largely defeats the purpose.

Certainly agree - just wondering if it might get the “treatment”.

My Subs got worse treatment than my Explorers and Rolex dressed them out in ceramic.

40mm would be nice, with an ice blue dial. I'd be all over that like something big that was all over something.

I also think that the movement will be updated, if anything. The 42mm size is perfect, for me anyways, and ceramic on this piece doesn’t make sense.

I love it the way it is though. The size, the big orange hand and orange lettering, and the way the white gold lined indices pop against the black dial are fantastic.

Sorry, I just found out I have a typo in my sentence. It is "If" not "is". By movable steel bezel, I meant to be able to rotate like GMT bezel. Bi-Directional perhaps. It is just useful feature for people who travel often. Not just the dual time. That way won't change the current look and make it more useful.

Maybe the Rainbow bezel. I am going to pick up another Polar 42 this year but I plan on keeping it stock.

BTW Happy New Year!! All the best to you and the Mrs.!!!!!!

I tried it on and was surprised how comfortable it felt at 42mm. I'd leave as is.

Updated movement at some point. A return to 40 mm is possible but the 42 mm gives Rolex an option on a slightly larger watch. I think it is perfect as it is.

It’d be interesting to see if they go back to 40mm in the future. My guess is no, but would like to be surprised. I don’t see them adding anything else to the line. They have bigger fish to fry. The explorer line has always sat the way it did in the Rolex lineup.

The 42 just needs a slight bezel change, similar design to the Sir Edmund Hillary tribute and a little chunkier. Also placing the EXPLER 2 font under the hands like they dip with the deep sea would be good

Love to see a Polar at 40mm with a black ceramic bezel. That would make my list. A new movement would be a bonus but not necessary to me with a watch with no date function.

Hadn't thought of that! That would be really cool! Although on the whole I love everything about the watch in it's current configuration. It's the watch that drew me in to the Rolex tractor beam.

Sorry, my entire post didn't come through....I was referancing a return to the original bezel. That would be slick. One of the best features of the Explorer 2 is it's retro 70's styling.

I think an Acrylic Crystal "downgrade" would be an upgrade for the Explorer line. I love my ExpI, but after wearing the Speedy with Hesalite, I prefer the Hesalite for activities where the crystal could be shattered. Such as Mountain Biking, Working under the hood of the car, etc. I don't want to baby my daily watches.

ON the black dialed version if they could re proportion the hands and match the paint job that would be cool...that and add a trip lock crown...I know its an Explorer and not a Diver, but the twinlock just seems small when compared to the rest of the case. Both were reasons why I flipped it after about a month. Probably the one Rolex I owned for the shortest amount of time.

I would like to see a 40mm case and the old hands. I don´t like them since they´re "thicker" than the old ones.
