First Ding is the Deepest...

Took a piece of the door jamb off on the bezel of my 5170G... I hope this is repairable when service time comes. Hurts so much but I'm sure I'll get over it. It adds "character" right...?

Ouch. Beautiful watch.
Guessing it is not that noticeable when not a close up pic.

It's fixable, only thing about Patek is it takes many months to get it fixed. This type of damage gives me nightmares. I'm glad I have an entry level Patek and it's very low and compact in design. But eventually I know a ding will happen, because after all *dings* happen.

I had a deep ding in my 5270r. Patek did a beautiful job fixing it. Happened the first week I had it. I now walk through doors very carefully!

Yep that's going to hurt. Inevitable though when you wear your watches, and there's no worse fate for a watch than to sit in a safe unworn.

Good to know that it's fixable... do you remember the cost?

I am thinking of waiting till service time which is 4-5 years out since this is a 5 month old piece. I am just happy it didn't damage the crystal but it took pieces of the door off which I had to wipe off which tells you it's pretty resilient. Definitely going to be more conscious of my wrist while walking around.

Agreed! I've done this with my steel rolexes and no damage whatsoever haha... a white gold Patek is a different story

No idea, I just got my 5167 two weeks ago from my AD. I have a lot of hairline scratches on the clasp and bezel. But no dings........ yet.

PS - How is the lume on the 5711? Is it viewable when you sleep?

Well said Russ

That hurts no question about it. Good news is it's fixable and you have one of the most beautiful modern chronos available!

I'm not telling you anything new but practice walking through doors with your left hand behind your back or turned in on your hip. crazy but near infallible.

Yep those dings are painful. I feel your pain. Door structures are some of the worst enemies of watches.

I had a minor scratch yesterday on my 5550. It happens. I tell myself that the watch is bigger than the nick, so look at the watch not the nick :)

Ouch that's not cool. Always put you watch either a little behind your back or in front of your stomach when passing through a door, since I got my first nice watch 5 years ago have done it and have not made a ding or serious scratch, sure they have hairlines, but that's it

Easily fixed.
Apparently PP laser solder metal back onto the case and can refinish....

Worry not.

LA Watchworks in Pasadena (not far from you) can fix that ding and you'll never know it was there. It won't take forever either.

Tough break but it is character building rather than giving imho.

Similar thing happened to a friend of mine. Patek fixed the dent at no cost. I can't recall if it was during the warranty period. You should consult your AD and Patek.

Why would PP fix a dent at no cost? They do not even recommend such repairs until the normal service time is due to minimize work done on the case.

Lol, I have no reason to make this up. The dent on my friend's 5710 was deep.

I would not rush to fix that on a 5 month old watch. The chance of getting more dings and scratches is high especially when you are still getting use to wear it.

Wait until service time. It would cost you less in terms of money and time.

PS: if this would make you feel better, many years ago I dropped the Pam I bought that very day on the floor and got a nice dent on the side if the case. I just wanted to vomit for a few days but I eventually got over it and the watch stays like that until I sold it 7 years later. Didn't want to fix it, I gave the option to the seller if he wanted to polish it or not.
