Chronographs

Been fascinated with chronographs, all kinds, recently.

Now tinkering with my rattrapante chronographs / doppelchronographs / split seconds chronographs

Clockwise (pun intended) from left: blancpain, girard pirregaux, omega and habring2.

Blanpain

Would love to hear your thoughts / experience with the Blancpain Chrono. Have been thinking of adding one of those for several years. Would love to hear compare/contrast between the BP and others.

I like it’s look. And that it is a flyback in addition to being a rattrapante.

But i dont like the screwdown pushers (like in a daytona).

And from the chronographs i have handled, the leman i have does not feel to be among the toughest and more robust.

Buy a Daytona without the screw down pushers?

Girard-Perregaux Classique Sport Foudroyante

It’s both a rattrapante and a foudroyante

Nice watch. I just dont like the solid caseback and that it is not labelled (and even named) rattrapante. Just foudroyante. Would rather it not be labelled at all or labelled both.

Speaking of foudroyantes, i dont know the english name. So i invented for own personal use: sub-second.

Did a little research on foudroyante just now:

Seconde foudroyante dates from at least the 1870's and was developed for precise timing of sporting events, especially horse racing. "Foudre" is French for "lightning", and this is the preferred name in English, along with "jumping seconds". In German, this complication is known as "Blitzende Sekunde" (flashing second), while Italians call it "diavoletto", meaning "little devil".

Did somebody say el primero? :)

This is my other foudroyante (or properly, a semi-foudroyante). The Zenith El Primero Striking Tenth Flyback.

It is also a flyback chronograph.

My flyback (retour-en-vol) chronographs

A couple of vintage Citizen 8110A pieces plus the Blancpain Leman (also a rattrapante) and the Zenith El Primero Striking Tenth (also a semi-foudroyante).

Sadly all modern daytonas have screw down pushers.

Going vintage though has many pitfalls.

That GP is a stunner. The sportier GP's are some of the best bargains out there.

I think chronograph look nice. However, personally I can’t own one. I prefer a simpler dial.

Agreed. There’s a ferrari version. But i like this better. Much cleaner. Besides, i dont have a ferrari anyway. My only beef is that they should have also written “Rattrapante” on the dial.

How about a seiko monopusher chronograph from 1967?

One of the simplest, cleanest and non-cluttered dial i have seen.

Or as they say in French: Monopoussoir

^ Agreed. The Monaco is one of the best chronographs out there.

In fact, i think it may be the best two register/subdial, two pusher, square case, destro chronograph there is. :)

^ Great chronographs sir.

Speaking of buttons, indeed, the most common chronograph i have seen is the two button/pusher (usually above and beyond the crown), three sub-dial/register type (usually at 3, 6 and 9 o’clock, but sometimes they are at 6, 9 and 12 o’clock) with the tachymeter scale (usually on a bezel, but sometimes on the dial itself). These chronographs are normally associated with racing and motorsports (to measure lap times and speed).

This type is best exemplified by the Daytona and the Speedmaster. And no surprise that they are offerings of the top two most popular sports watches today.
