OK, first of all, there will never be a consensus on this topic because a) forum participants are from all over the world, some live in urban areas, some live on the country side, etc, and b) some need to be formal at work while others can wear whatever.

I do think it is safe to say that the workplace is getting a lot less formal over the years. On top of that, a wristwatch is no longer a necessary item as we have smartwatches, laptops, and iPhones. Wearing a wristwatch is a choice, and fewer and fewer people are choosing to wear one.

At the end of the way, I'm going to live my life the way I want to. I really don't need a dress watch as I'm almost never one but I think they are elegant and smart-looking, so I'm probably going to add one to my collection. If that makes my old, so be it.

the other thing is that a elegant dress like a cartier tank solo is probably perceived same as a patek or lange at 1/10 the price

This seems like a stretch unless you are talking about someone who knows nothing about watches but just spots your wrist across the room. I also think many Patek and Lange dress watch owners don’t care whether the average person knows they are wearing a patek or Lange or what craftsmanship goes into them vs a tank solo.

I’m generally surprised at how casual the work environment has become. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t necessarily think it’s a bad thing, but every now and then it would be nice to see dressier clothes in the workplace.

I’ve long preferred dress watches to sports watches, regardless of the current trend. I wouldn’t call the dress watch dead...these things are cyclical. If it is dead, I suppose prices will stay in my favor

Like many of the previous posters, I enjoy dressing high/low with watches/wardrobe. A nice classic watch can still give a neat T and jeans some pop

You may be right OP. I think for the majority of people, spending hundreds of dollars on a watch is largely impractical. Much less spending thousands to tens of thousands on dress watches. There are other factors as well such as usefulness (Apple Watch), and upbringing (are watches worn in the household) that potentiate this. At the end of the day, we watch aficionados primarily just get the watches we want without regard as to what others think. Who knows, maybe you might be the one to start a trend in younger friends as they see and appreciate your love of watches. I know some of my younger colleagues (in their 20s) get excited to see the various watches I wear to work and have started wearing watches like Seikos. They may not be dress watches but it’s a start

As our culture changes, so does our dress and manners and it has most certainly become more casual. Subtlety is mostly dead, which is why the wealthy like giant APs and RMs instead of the understated PPs and VCs of past generations. I've read that more Americans attended Classical music concerts than baseball games in the 1950s and that was when the sport was America's pastime. Neither Classical music nor baseball is coming back in any major way and I don't think the dress watch will either. Still, I firmly believe that one should dress and do what one wants.

Personally, I think a watch on a bracelet looks ridiculous with any tie, even a knit one, and I think dress watches look better than sport watches when wearing a suit or sportcoat sans tie or even a buttondown shirt and chinos. I like my sport watches but I love my dress watches. There is room for both in a collection if you like them and you shouldn't care what most people think.

The older I get the more I gravitate toward dress watches.

I don't wear any of my sports watches any more. And I don't need a sport watch. What I need is a comfortable time/date complication, which I prefer on a strap.
