5970r vs 5270r

Hi All
Would just like to hear opinions between these two watches. Which do you prefer and why?
Personally I like the slightly bigger size of the 5270r and like the in house movement....

the 5270R really dialed in the design.

i saw it in person recently and have to say i am a fan, especially of the cleaner dial layout.

they are both the tops.

in the long run however, i believe the 5970 is the better purchase for value retention.

Agree, I prefer the 5270. I like the apertures to indicate leap year and day / night better on the 5270, but if I'm spending that sort of money value retention is important. That currently makes the 5970 a better buy.

Just out of interest, why do you say that? Ok I know we don't know yet how long the 5270r will be in production, but assuming they are similar production numbers would you still say the same?

I'd gladly own either, but having just handled the 5970r, I'm pretty certain that would be my choice over just about anything

Since the 5970 has been discontinued for some time, we know its production numbers were limited. For those who were original buyers of the 5970, the watch price has appreciated a good amount and their ROI is pretty decent. However what we don't know is if it will continue to appreciate in value in the future. Like with any "investment", past performance is no guarantee of future returns if you are looking at the watch in pure financial terms. Is it a good buy at today's secondary market price? It depends on who you ask. Some may say it is overvalued now. If you love the design of the 5970 more than the 5270, then it is a different story. Pricing and value retention aside, I think the 5270R is a better watch. But in today's world where people first think of a Patek watch as an " investment", that certainly changes the story quite a bit.

Simple reason being the 5270 uses the in house movement.

They can make as many as they want.

In terms of looks, basically splitting hairs, both pretty much equal. Value retention, depending on how much you paid, probably the 5970.

However, I much prefer a watch with an In house movement, so if I was willing to tolerate some lack of appreciation, I'd go for the 5270.

Both are awesome, but I think I prefer by a bit the 5270R, I like it, and everyone seems to agree that the movement is better, but again both are hot… And of course the 5970 is better for collectibility, but can't go wrong with either

5270R. Like the cleaner dial and the more robust, higher power reserve in-house movement. Not too worried about value retention. Just buy right from the start.

I totally agree and I might add there is nothing wrong with either of these grail pieces. I really like the 5270R and was told that the production numbers will be very limited. We shall see. There is a 5270R on Chrono but I thought it was not out yet for purchase.

I find Lume is only useful on the hands... To get that you have to increase your budget

I always said 5970 above 5270

but this 5270 looks amazing !

Still probably the 5970 because of the movement and it will be a rarer piece but to be honest, this 5270 is imo the best 5270 until now

I agree, the latest 5270 versions are close to perfection - my only residual (v minor) gripe is that I wish the left and right sub-dials were at 3 and 9 exactly.

It has become a really tough decision now, but as others have mentioned, the bulletproof 5970 residuals must play a part in the decision.

From a pure aesthetic perspective, the 5270 with the cleaner looking and undisrupted lines of the case. The slightly protruding pushers on the side, top, and bottom 5970 case kinda spoils it a bit for me.

5270's more modern look makes the 5970 look a little dated now.

I like the 5970 with a more symmetrical dial. indexes at 2 and 4 o'clocks and 8 and 10 o'clocks balance better as the inside dials at 3 and 9 o'clock levels.

I agree. Just because it's an in-house movement, doesn't mean they will mass produce them. I am confused as to why the in-house movement subtracts value for this watch...

On purely looks alone, I will prefer the 5270R, due to the larger case and more majestic looking lugs / case and it also have a technically more advance in-house PP movement. However, for this kind of $$$, I will presume resale will have to figure prominently into the selection criteria. And regrettably, 5270s until now isn't doing that great compare to the 5970s.

It will be interesting to see whether the 3rd generation 5270 prices harden a little given that they have corrected some of the early dial anomalies which have received so much negative press.

So Roger's 5970P was the first Patek I ever tried on that really had me go "WOW." With that said, the 5270 is gorgeous...I think investment $$ aside, 5270 has my heart.

Was the 5970 a success from the very start of its life? Did it appreciate very quickly? It could still be early days for the 5270 and as has already been said with the changes made to the dial this I'm sure will make a huge difference to resale. The 5270 could still be a good investment as long as you buy at the right price.
