Would You Pay $3K for a Casio G-Shock?

The G-Shocks have carved out a very successful niche market in the $200 range but at $3K they might be pushing things a bit. Imagine trying to convince (or impress) others that you actually paid $3K for something that pretty much looks like any other G-Shock.

I don't want a cheap G-shock and I really really don't want a $3k G-shock.

Love G-Shocks, but let's keep them in the $300 and under range.

Wow thats expensive. Just bought a G Shock with all of that for £227.00. It looks almost the same. So why $3000.00 ??

No. But there are some in the $500-$700 range I like. But even that feels like a lot for a G Shock.

No I wouldn't.

But I have to say that as far as querying the price of expensive watches goes, if you own a Rolex, or any other "luxury" watch, then all bets are off.

The point being if you own a $10000 watch you've already gone way past the point of rational decision making - after all you could buy a quartz for 50 bucks that will easily surpass your Rolex for accuracy - and you're buying your particular piece of pointless luxury for reasons that have nothing to do with practicality or purpose and everything to do with vanity.

In that context it doesn't really make sense to point at a Casio and say "that's way over-priced" because anybody who owns more than one or two watches that cost more than a few bucks each is spending money for more than just pure functionality. Though of course not incidentally any Casio blows any Rolex out of the water for both functionality and accuracy. That MRG almost certainly trumps a Sub or DJ in the exclusivity stakes too.

And if you argue that it's not worth it "because it looks like any other G-Shock" then I could say "why buy a Submariner when it looks like a Steinhart?" (or any one of a number of homage/rip-off models).

I've toyed with the idea of picking one up at the 1K price point, but I wouldn't even consider a G-Shock in the 3K range.

It took me 20 years to put on the Casio Pathfinder my wife gave me. Basically an early Gshock, I thought it was hideous. As they became more common I occasionally wear it. They are tough and durable - the ultimate beaters. But $3k for a glorified plastic, technologically over stimulated, gizmo laden watch based on a low cost mass produced quartz movement is nuts 🥜

Even then, I'd hesitate... Casio's rubbery plastic goes friable & crumbles to dust after a decade or 3 even when kept untouched & out of sunlight etc etc... PITA when one's a vintage Casio packrat

I personally wouldn't buy a g shock if it were a nickel. Certainly not 3,000 unless it was solid platinum and I could smelter it for a profit :)

I'll only speak of Rolex watches but as we all know - there's more to owning a Rolex than telling the time.

It's not for me, but I'm sure there is a market for this watch.

No, but I might pay someone $500 for one after they decided they didn’t want it anymore and/or needed the money.

The market for this watch is hardcore G Shock collectors. I'm fairly sure Casio sells plenty of $1000+ G Shocks.

The one time I visited a "G Factory" store, the average customer was well over 30. They were mostly wearing Rolex, AP, and Panerai. I assume they collect G-shocks as a hobby and don't necessarily wear them in public.

For some reason, in SE Asia a lot of people collect Casio and Seiko. When I sold my Seiko SLA017 diver, I got several offers from buyers in Malaysia and the Philippines. These were not average dudes -- they wrote in perfect English and were prepared to wire $3000+ immediately.

Back to G-shock -- Similar to Hello Kitty, many people love it, but I can't fully wrap my head around it. As as a result, I do not own any G-shock watches.
