Panerai boggles Rolex salesperson's mind. lol
I stopped by a Rolex AD today to see what they had. It took less than a minute for the sales lady to comment on my Panerai. She didn't have a clue what it was. She asked why I chose Panerai over Rolex. I explained that I prefer its uniqueness, low production numbers, and larger size. She picked up the PAM while I was trying on the new SS GMT and she couldn't believe the weight... the Rolexes are like a feather compared to my 164, and my watch doesn't even have a metal bracelet! I had a good time looking around and educating the sales staff.

I have to LOL
I've been to a few "watch stores, use that term loosely" that were more interested in my Panerai than what they were selling. Not that I'm in the market for another, but my AD just called , they had TWO SE watches. One I already have, the other is just too cool . THe Pam 246. No pictures, but it is a chrono with a subdial where the timing hand rotates 1/second & has 1/8 second increments. Just very cool to see that little hand spinning around. Also she said " I might be able to help you if your still interested in one of those SS Daytonas" It is going to be a rough day tomorrow when I go visit.

Well, I don't think you can expect a Rolex salesperson to know much--those are not exactly high income jobs. But I have to mention that even so, I too am often surprised at how little they tend to know about watches, whether you are talking about Rolex or about the watch industry in general.
I have pretty much assumed that Panerai watches are going to be a bit too big for my 7.5" wrist so I haven't looked at them much. However, I have noticed that they design their dials to be highly readable and they also seem to have very excellent lume--two features which rank high for me. I was thinking of making a visit to the Rolex dealer here in the next couple of weeks and it is just a short walk down the block to the shop which carries Panerai--so I think I will try one on to see how it fits. I am considering the Luminor Submersible, model #00024. |

On a 7.5" wrist, even the 47 mm Pannies will fit you just fine.
The Sub, will look big at first, but will fit you.

IMHO, unless you have over a 8 inch wrist, the 44mm and bigger Panerais will look too large.

Sorry, just got back from Malaysia, and when I saw some of these super large watches, a lot on PAMS, on smaller wrist it just looks ridiculous IMHO and too faddish. 38-42mm is about the right size for average size wrist (7-8 inches). Smaller, under average size wrist (under 7 inches) should be around 36-39mm. PAMs look great if you have a very large wrist over 8 inches or are wearing strapped to outside of your dive suit (as they were originally made for) or artic suit. The trend towards this super large watch craze is more of a bling bling fashion fad in my opinion.

If you like 44,45 or 47mm then go and buy it and be happy in your choice. I am an absolute novice when it comes to Panerai, but in my three "trying on" trips I quickly came to the conclusion that the larger sizes were too big for me. Thats why I'm concentrating on 42mm (PAM 98) or 40mm (PAM 48,244 or 241)..........just a personal preference. The good thing is that very few people get forced to go out and buy a high end watch......so buy what makes you happy. Rolex and Panerai both rock by the way |

Me thinks that might be at a Panerai GTG.

Larddog, Photo proves my opinion, too large. The lugs are hanging over the sides of the wrist. But, again, these are my "opinions", if you like wearing extra large watches, then it is your wrist and your money. Enjoy!

I see there is considerable disagreement over whether a 44mm Panerai will look ok on a wrist of 7.5" (in my case) and up to 8" wrists. Personally I am going to try one on later this month if I get time to do so to see what I think. Regardless, I like how readable they are and their outstanding lume performance. We'll see how it goes.

Yes, I will say that Panerais are very well made, come with one of the best presentation boxes in the industry, and the viewing of the dial due tot he AR coated crystals and great lumination is superb. Also really like their classic vintage looking styling.
Colemantis, that is one very nice looking Panerai you have on your wrist! Like the Arabic Number all around the dial. Seems to fit you OK, but would not go any larger. Though there is abig difference between your 7.5 inch and under 7 inch wrist. A lot also depends on the wrist shape vs size. A person who has a 7.5 inch wrist, but the wrist is flat and thin in width, would probably look better with a 44mm panerai, than someone with a perfectyly circular wrist, which would give less surface area ont he top side, thus lugs hand over. |

For some reason I didn't see the picture you posted of your Panerai on your 7.5" wrist before I wrote my post (maybe we posted at the same time). Regardless, thank you for the photo--very nicely done. I am very impressed with how readable the faces of those watches are and I have yet to hear any issues about quality other than that people like them and become Panerai fanatics after a short time--there is obviously something to that! Thanks!

44mm is perfect
Went to the local Panerai AD this weekend specifically to try one on and see how it looks on my wrist (about 7 1/2"). The lugs came just to the edge of my wrists. Perfect!
Colemantis' wrist shot says it all. The watch is large, but not TOO large... I liked Panerai styling from the first moment, so maybe I'm a little predisposed to say this, but the size is just right...my 2 cents |

Panerai is a nice watch but ,rolex is a better movement and higher quality all around.

I would not necessarily agree with that. Some of the modified ETA movements that Panerai uses are very good. And some have some modifications that excel over Rolex, such as Ceramic Ball Bearings for the rotor. Also Panerai's new In-house 8 day power reserve GMT movement is exstremely well made and durable. Fit and finish of Panerai is also well done. IMHO, Rolex is kind of an entry level high end Mechanical watch. |

I have a 7.5" wrist, and own a 36mm Rolex & 44mm Panerai.
People get hung up on watch size, and I'm not sure why. If it sings to you when on your wrist, buy it. If not, don't.
