Michael Schumacher in Coma after Brain Surgery

Michael Schumacher took a fall while skiing earlier today. The first reports were that he was conscious and his injuries were not life-threatening.

Now, the reports are that his condition has worsened, he is now in a coma, and his his life is at risk.

It's very sad, my thoughts are with him and his family.

He is the greatest racing driver of all time.

If Schumacher sustained an epidural hematoma (bleeding between the skull and brain lining) it would be very typical to be initially conscious and lucid. Once pressure builds up, coma and brain damage or death can ensue. The emergency treatment is to drill holes in the skull over the blood clot to release the pressure. Epidural hematoma is one of the most frightening injuries that emergency personnel deal with. Unrecognized, it is frequently fatal. Even when burr holes are immediately drilled, recovery is not guaranteed.

If the bleeding is in the brain tissue itself, survival depends on location, size, time until surgery and other factors.

The unsettling thing at this time is that I have already seen one retrospective of Schumacher's life and on one CNN report the reporter kept referring to Schumacher in the past tense, even though by all accounts is still with us.

I wish they wouldn't do that.

Michael has been one of my favorite athletes since I discovered F1 on the Speed Channel some years back.

These kinds of events cause me great concern.

Excellently explained. This is incredibly complex injury with many variables, but all appropriate steps have been taken , and in timely fashion, so let us hope that the outcome will be good, although it can not be guaranteed.
Very tragic.

Yes. Dad died from a subdural hematoma. He fell and hit his head on the tile entryway of his home the night before, had a normal day (driving around, running errands) until after dinnertime, when he complained of a bad headache. He was brain dead by 11pm.

Yikes! That's so sad and pretty scary how sudden it can be.

I'm normally not one of these folks that is fascinated by celebrities/athletes, but I spent a good share of my life watching this man drive the crap out of F1 cars. So this is kind of a sad deal to me.

For his family's sake I hope for a good result. An unfortunate occasional result of risk taking. One of the best F1 drivers of his time. Rain virtually guaranteed him another win. I've never seen a better wet conditions driver ever.

That's truly heartbreaking. I'm a big fan. We were just talking about helmets while skiing. If he parishes I hope he goes to F1 heaven with Senna. Two of the greatest F1 drivers... ever.

The next official update Schumacher's condition will be a 1000GMT, which is about five hours from now.

His wife and children are at his side.

Thoughts and prayers.
