The GOAT (you may have coined a new WIS term) is a personal choice. With a lot of good Rolex designs out there over the years, it will be pretty tough to reach a consensus among the loyal members on this forum. I like the GOAT watch term, though.

I think most consider Patek the greatest watch making company in history. The sub is an iconic Rolex for sure and I love the SubC!

The greatest watch of all time is pretty hard to nail down.
The criteria are myriad and since the main purpose of a watch is to keep precise time, the some of the best at that are among the cheapest and even the flimsiest. Bulova's Protectionist line of watches are accurate to 10 seconds a year, have a sweeping second-hand, and they are very affordable. The biggest problem for me is that most are gaudy and very big. However, being a Sub owner, I have to admit that it's a heck of a watch and an icon to boot.

Very subjective...but I often travel for 2-3 weeks for work and am in very casual, business casual, to formal situations. To be honest, there are only 2 watches that fit my need if I'm bringing one...the sub and the explorer. For me, that puts the sub in the running of GOAT.
Btw, I have to hand it to the Daytona fans...they've been the most vocal naysayers! :)

I don't think you can beat the GMT IIc right now as an all-rounder - practical, can dress it up, can dress it down, and no other GMT watch can improve on what it does. It's a great example of Rolex design - is it the greatest watch of all time? Well, it's hard to say, but I think it's the most useful luxury watch on the market, and the best example of its genre.
The original Sub helped to create the modern dive watch (whether you think the Blancpain FF came first or not, it really became the yardstick, and the core design has been lifted many times), so its place in horological history is secure. The basic Oyster Perpetual defined the modern wristwatch, yet is often overlooked in favour of its more complicated brothers - how many other watches on the market are waterproof and automatic? It has to be up there as one of the most important watches There are countless greats....the JLC Reverso, the Omega Speedmaster, the AP Royal Oak, any PP complication piece. The fact that Rolex can field three credible contenders in such company is quite something |

It's a tough call. I'll say the DD is also to be considered. Cheers
