Hello guys,

I have a 1601 who got offered to me be a friend. It's a SS/white gold, it has a gilt dial but in really bad shape. Is it worth more than a 1601 with a classic dial in good shape ?

A gilt dial on a 1601 may put it in a certain era, or maybe it's just a two tone, but it won't increase the value of it.

Condition is paramount, 1601's don't have the following that the GMTs and Subs have where a gilt dial, in the right era, may make a difference..

Partially agreed with Tool that condition is paramount when buying a vintage Rolex. To get the value of it, do a search. Jacek, sold one for around $5-$6K. That is triple the value of a tt 1601.

Just because they are listed at a higher price doesnt mean that they will sell at a higher price. Best thing to do if its an auction house or the bay, is go to the sold listings and research what they actually sold for. That will give you an idea what the market and buyer are willing to pay.

Four digit DJs are all over the place and it's condition driven. Just like the rest of the models the good ones are getting more expensive. The corroded cases with toothpick lugs, bad dials that barely run should be priced at salvage value. 1100 for the movement, 200 for the case, 50 for a bad dial 150 for a nice one, 400-500 for a functioning jubilee bracelet, so even salvage is pushing 2k. NOS with an interesting dial, B&P, 5k?

Swapping bracelets and dials around on a DJ is no sin. Look for a nice case with a fresh service, the rest can be added.

As you described it, no, it's probably not. But nice gilt dial DJs are hard to find, and will absolutely command a price premium over similar condition regular dial DJs.

If the dial is nice and glossy it will for sure sell for minimum double of a normal 1601.
