Why do Tudor Submariners cost so much?

This picture here is exactly why their value continues to increase; they're a beautiful vintage /semi-vintage dive watch collectors are willing to pay for. It's really that simple. And they're rarer than their Rolex brothers and that limited supply only further increases the price. Still it wouldn't matter if they weren't so desirable. I sure want one someday... if I can afford one, LOL!

Recently closed eBay auction 7021 Snowflake

Certainly others here on TRF were watching this recently closed auction.

A 7021/0 closing with a hammer price north of 4K. No bracelet and the bezel looked kind of funky to me with the bright blue hue (replaced recently?).

Otherwise it certainly appeared genuine. No bubble here.

Thoughts?

Service dial. wrong insert (looks to be shaved down to fit the bezel, hands look off.....you are basically buying the case, movement, and dial (which is correct for a later model).

Sold about where it should have been. A nice correct blue date is on ebay with 5 days to go at 6800 or so....it will go for about 7500 imho. All parts on it are correct and aged well.

This is what i have seen for flakes:

SPCG blues 9k plus
SPCG black 8k plus
blue dates 7.5-9k
black dates 6-8k
blue no dates 8-10k
black no dates 7-9k

Thanks for the feedback concerning this auction.

That is interesting information.

I'll look on eBay for the "correct blue date" you have mentioned.

Cheers.

at the end of the day, the market went left to its own, always values things as it sees it,
unless its a flash in the pan hype situation,

if these tudor watches had no link with rolex, they would be peanuts, its all about the name rolex driving the value of a tudor.

I really like them, and fair play to those that have one.

Haha - ridden hard 7169 Monte Carlo but not a Home Plate. Looks much better in person than in my lousy photos

(I need to get it service and I have correct hands for subdials)

Tudor Sub prices have taken off and perhaps peaked. Chronos seem to be following the same pattern...

Unfortunately I was late to the game and my budget now doesn't stretch to 4 digit vintage refs. My transitional 94300; last of the Big Blocks..

The 64 Tudor was bought from a former Navy diver. The guy I bought it from bought it at the Naval Exchange at Pearl Harbor where he was stationed. I am sure it saw some crazy things in its time. Here is part of what he wrote me when he shipped it.

"What I can confirm is that this watch was purchased in 1966 while stationed in Pearl Harbor on board the USS Safeguard ARS-25. This ship was primarily a rescue and salvage ship, with several certified divers including myself. The watch was also worn in Vietnam until 1968 and continually worn until the late 70’s."

It's usually an indication that something's been replaced but not necessarily. Sometimes parts just age differently. When the patina is a very even tone on the hands, dial and bezel it is definitely more desirable however.
