Follow up to....vintage bug bitten.....which one

So I've decided a different route than my original thinking

Not going with BIG vintage purchase...ExpII MKI dial, but a little more conventional.....ok maybe unconventional for the vintage side of the forum
Going with the modern ExpII (42mm) and... the BEST 5513 MAXI dial, I can find! Doesn't need to be box & papers, just a fine example. I just want a robust dial, not delicate, for daily wear if needed. No safe queen.

One is purchased, ExpII (thanks DavidSW). As for the 5513.... hunt is on

If Anyone knows of such a treasure, let me know

I think this is not a bad move....the red on vintage watches imo command too much premium. I love my mk3 maxi. I own the 216570 also in black...a fine robust watch with a nod to the 1655. Good choice enjoy.

Good move, modern and vintage. Take your time on your 5513 search. They're not too hard to find in mediocre condition, but quite tough to find in excellent condition. Good luck!

+1. Took me about 2 years to find my 5513. Have in mind what you want and don't give in and buy one that is available. Patience...

Wow Richard, what a reshuffle. I tried a white 42 Explorer about a year ago in an attempt to find a non-delicate daily, non-blingy Rolex. I got bored with it in about a year. I like the matt dialed 5513s but to me, right now, the are glaringly over priced. I hope you can find a decent deal in decent condition. Do you plan on putting your gilt Sub in a safe?

Thank you. I've seen a good looking piece from Craft & Tailored, just never dealt with them.

Not sure about the GILT Sub yet. I put a couple away last year, so I may do the same with the GILT. I had it for sale but took it off this morning. After this move, my rotation of daily "wearers" will be this (photoshopped in the two new ones of course ) but this will be the five I keep ready to wear

Yes I have a GILT...Love the GILT...love Subs in general! There's a few "age" spots on the glossy finish that bug 'me'. It's one of those things that, if you didn't know it were there, it wouldn't be seen. Just something that bothers me. So I've decided to go with something with a mat dial or a dial that's a little more stable/bulletproof. As I like to wear my vintage pieces, never worry about them, not 'collect' them. This is my own personal preference. So I may put it away...sell, I'm not sure.

That is definitely a change in direction! I love the new Exp 2, I have a polar. And personally I'd prefer a nice 5513 over a red 1680. But no 1655?!?!? Oh well, guess there's one more good one out there for me then!

Out of interest, have you thought about adding a SD4K to the rotation?

Had one a while ago, it's a great piece! Kind of redundant with a GMT-C black dial, and DSSD though. I'd like to see what happens with the anniversary edition, if anything. Rumors for now

Take your time looking. It took me awhile until I found the "right" 5513 that met my expectations.

For what ever reason, 5513's have increased tremendously in price and they are selling like hot cakes, so when you find it, prepare to 💸

Here's a pic of my "Roger Moore" 5513 for your viewing pleasure.

Love the Maxi's! Out of all the Rolex I have had I miss it the most.
Going through a similar pattern. Sold my gilt Sub last week and will probably add a 216570 Polar next. Trying to wait until Basel though...
Love your 5 watch set up. Nice diversity. Only thing I might debate is going Polar instead to add a white dial to the mix.
Good luck on the hunt Richard.

Richard,

I don't know if you have checked out Eric Ku site as of late, but he listed an absolutely gorgeous example of a maxi 5513 a couple days ago

http://10pastten.com/watch/ta797

It might be what you are looking for. "Issue free" serviced by Rolex in 2015. Has a service insert but an original insert can be sourced easily. Everything else dial and hands are original and match, creamy patina. Thought you might like to know.

Erik Ku is a great seller. I does AMAZE me where the price of a pristine example has gone in the last several years.

Me to Jason. So so examples are selling head only for 8500 from what I notice and the pristine examples command a nice fat premium. What is even crazier than the prices is that these are actually selling and selling quick.
