Thoughts on recutting Cases?

I assume you would have to have a pretty strong case to begin with for it to be a recut candidate, correct? Or do they actually laser weld material back on to the case?

Any case can be "re-cut," and there is no laser welding, unless the case otherwise would require that. It's an extra expense and would be disclosed before the job was done.

Let's keep in mind that "re-cutting" is the same as "refinishing" that Rolex Service Centers have done for decades. Sometimes it's just a light polish/touch-up, but RSCs sometimes more aggressively polish (re-cut) the lugs, especially on a beat-up case. This is nothing unusual, although I'd avoid it on a vintage Rolex unless the case was beat to hell or had a previous poor polish/refinish.

So recutting removes material? That would seem to be a bad idea unless it's absolutely necessary.
I like the idea of adding material back through laser welding, and then refinishing it as new specs. I've seen some fantastic examples of that done by Bob Ripley.

If done properly they remove just a tiny bit of material. There is a good podcast somewhere online where Beau from LAWW talks about the process a little bit. It's worth listening to.

I guess now would be a good time to share some pics of the work I had LAWW do to my 1675 as well. My case was considered fat but polished enough that the original chamfers were rounded out. Beau recommended to do the full case refinish and then never touch it again, which is what I plan to do. I have to say, I’m ecstatic with the results.
