Inherited a Red Sub - need something to wear

I inherited a red sub from my grandfather a number of years ago. I love it but it just sits in a safe and I only wear it for special occasions - I’m just too afraid something will happen to it. I would like to get myself a Rolex That I feel more comfortable wearing and I was set on a new Sub. However, I’m starting to wonder if I should go vintage or with something else entirely. Partly because I haven’t been able to find any from an AD. Any advice on new vs vintage vs another option. Your help is appreciated for a Rolex novice.

but if you feel unease to wear your grandfather's wouldn't be the same if you buy a vintage just curious.

I say go for the modern - sub no date, sub, DJ41, OP39 etc

Thanks. I was thinking Vintage - but not Red. New was my first thought and I am on a wait list with the local AD. They are saying maybe October!!

Oct is not bad, in some places it would be 6 months to a year.

I’ll trade you my Sea Dweller for it so you don’t have to worry about messing up the Sub.

To me it is simple...Get the Red Sub serviced, insure it and enjoy it. Otherwise, what is the point of owning it? I am sure that your grandfather would prefer that his watch was being worn as opposed to sitting in a safe not being worn. The 1680 is a great watch that has survived since the early 1970's, so I am sure it can handle whatever you can dish out! As far as a modern Rolex, you can never go wrong with a 16610 Sub.

I don't think you should go vintage if you are worried about something happening to your red Sub.

This. Unless your doing some extreme mountain bike riding down mountains with a 20% grade, wear that thing. It'll be a nice reminder of him every time you look down at your wrist.

If you're worried it'll be stolen, your only doing yourself a disservice. If any shady people ever ask you about it, tell them it's a fake your grandfather bought in china and you wear for sentimental reasons.

It's special because your grandfather actually wore it. Honor him by wearing it yourself, and pass it down one day to the next generation in your family.

Be careful about servicing, make sure it is kept original. No need to service it if it works fine.

Thanks everyone. You are absolutely right. I am going to insure it and then wear it everyday. It will honour my grandfather and remind me of him. Incidentally, he wore it everyday and everywhere - fishing, gardening, wherever.
I really appreciate the advice - as soon as I read it I knew it was right.

Good on you! I trust if you would have put it in a safe for rare occasions, when it was time to pass it on, you would have regretted not wearing it more.

Also, knowing your grandfather wore it everyday, and by you doing the same, that certainly seems like you're honoring its history!

IMHO .. If you worried, you should get a modern 116610. MUCH more reliable. Great beater. Keep the red sub as a heirloom for your children.

Agreed!
Joking aside, get a Sub 5513 for everyday as it would be great addition.

Not quite sure how any modern Rolex would be MUCH more reliable than a well maintained ie serviced 1680. They're just mechanical wrist watches after all, not some high tech piece of avionics, or whatever. They will both tell you the correct time, and if you remember to set it, the correct date too.

True true true.. you are very correct since technology advancement just doesn’t matter to some.

Welcome to TRF

If you need a recommendation on service, consider Damiani In Woodbridge. Talk to Chonger, he’s their watch tech and does amazing restorative and service on Rolex. He did my 67 5513 a couple of years ago and he’s great

Please post some pictures

Great decision to wear it! Like someone else stated...insurance, and wear the heck out of it!
That’s what I did with my vintage pieces....enjoy!
