Incoming... First Grand Seiko

It has taken me years to buy my first Grand Seiko. I have been close to buying one couple of times, but there has always been something to hold me back.

When they introduced the new 9F86 quartz GMT movement and the SPGN001 Limited Edition I was hooked. I have always liked GMT watches and admired the finishing of Grand Seikos.

It has been over 16 years since I have bought a quartz watch so I was ready to buy the 9F and have been reading about it and how it’s considered to be a quality movement.

So here it is. A great size for me and I really like the design and color.

Nice choice. I’ve had that one on my radar as well. I’ll probably do the blue dial. I hadn’t been looking for one though because I understood they wouldn’t be available until the beginning of the year.

They also had in the store a limited edition SPGN007G from the Heritage collection with a green dial and the new 9F86 GMT quartz movement.

I had not even known about that model and it looked really nice live. Hard to find information about it, but this the link to global Grand Seiko site.

https://www.grand-seiko.com/global-e...tions/SBGN007G

And picture from the internet. This picture doesn’t do it any justice as it looked really nice in person.

Thanks.

The limited edition was available now and the regular production models will be available beginning of the year. The blue looks really nice from the pictures.

This is my biggest gripe about Grand Seiko. Their web pics are horrible. If I were going on pics alone, I’d never even consider one.....which would be a shame since, IMO, they are some of the best watches out there.

Congrats!! Great looking piece. I've actually been thinking about this one recently. Would love more pics and thoughts after you've worn it a while.

Thanks. I will try to write a small follow up and add more pictures when I have worn it a while. I’m just very busy at the moment.

My initial thoughts are, that the SBGN001 is very nice watch. Perfect size for me and very comfortable.

People have said that the design looks like Rolex Explorer 2, but having owned the EXP2 in the past, I can say that the Grand Seiko has a different vibe than the Rolex and looks and feels different enough.

Bracelet is of good quality. There is no micro adjustment, but it comes with two half links and at least I got a perfect fit.

Quality of hands and dial are superb and I like that it has lumibrite.

Finishing overall is very good, but unfortunately my watch has a minor quality control issue on the steel bezel and it is now being send back to Grand Seiko.

There is a ring around the bezel, which has probably come when they have pressed the bezel to the case. It is not a scratch, but kinda like polished area on the steel.

Here are couple of pictures where you can see how light reflects differently from the bezel.

So sorry for your quality control issue, but they’ll fix it for you!
Great looking watch; I don’t know anything about GS watches, but that model is very special. Beauty. Congrats!!!

Thanks .

I don’t mind the minor issue myself and I have had quality control issues from other brands as well like Rolex and Patek. What sets a brand and watch apart from other brands is how they handle those issues and the service I have gotten from Grand Seiko and my AD has been really good.

When I noticed the “ring” around the bezel, I went to my AD and we took pictures and he send them to Grand Seiko. The reply from Grand Seiko was that they take great pride on their finishing and wanted to remedy the problem straight away.

Also when I have had problems with Rolex, it has always been a easy and straightforward. Patek was more difficult, but we got there in the end.

I will post better pictures when I get the watch back. My pictures were not that good, just quickly taken to show the issue. It is a really good looking watch in person.
