New Rolex Owner

Hello,

I just picked up my first Rolex. I love it. It is a 1953 Oyster Perpetual Date. 34mm. It is a beautiful watch but did not come with an authentic Rolex Bracelet. I am looking for a 7835 (19mm) band with 357 end links. I am pretty sure this is the correct band and end link for my watch. Does anyone happen to have what I need for sale? Anyhow, I am looking forward to all the great info on this site. Look forward to my next Rolex! Thanks.

Alex

I hope the seller also disclosed that your dial is refinished.

Depending on the age of your watch you would probably need a rivet bracelet. Folded 7835 came in the late 60’s.

Thanks for the info, How can you tell that it is refinished? I know older rolexs (pre 60's) did not all say "Swiss" or any of the variations. (t swiss, etc.) This face does not have the swiss notation, I assumed it was original.

I hope it's just a refinished dial. If I saw that watch on Craigslist or in a pawn shop, my first thought would be that it was a knock-off.

I had it verified at Accutime in Newport Beach. It is a legit Rolex with original parts. The watchmaker there did not say anything about the face being resurfaced. What makes you think it would be a knock off?

Serial number is 912195. Which dates to between 1952 and 1953.

The dial. But if the case and movement are legit, that's a relief.

Appraisers might use language that a new vintageer could misinterpret. A repainted dial could be considered 'original' in that it's the same brass disc just with different paint, but it would not be acceptable as a Rolex dial by any purchaser unless it had been repainted by Rolex themselves (which they wouldn't do they never do that). Anyway, this one's definitely been altered. So what to do? If you want a proper correct Rolex send it to one of the majors like LAWW for service and see what they say. Hope a period-correct dial can be found at a reasonable price...this is a rather old watch, but Rolex was big in the 1950s and there are lots of parts out there. The rest having been authenticated means a new dial might be all that's necessary.

Good luck!

Obviously I don't know the specifics of your purchase, but if it's still possible for you to contact the seller to inform them that the dial has been repainted, I would definitely do that. And, fwiw, I'm surprised Accutime Watch Center didn't mention anything about it.

Would someone enlighten me but how is that movement correct for a 1953 Rolex? I thought the red Teflon coating didn't come until later? Or am I mistaken? OP's photo of the movement is a bit blurry but didn't the 1560 movement, with the Teflon coated reversing wheels, come out in 1959?

I thought the movements back then would resemble something similar to this? Butterfly rotor and all?

The serial given by the OP refers to after the serial number restart, so 1963 or so. Perhaps ref 1500.

OP, what is the ref between the bottom lugs?

If that's the case it makes much more sense. It would explain a lot but OP would still need to do something about that dial...

As for OP, here's an example on dial text font you should expect to see from a 60's Rolex OP Date dial, and an example of the rivet bracelet from that era.

Thanks for the insight. I assumed it was a 53 because of the alpha hands. I thought those were only used pre60s.

Your watch has Dauphine hands, not Alpha.

I'd try to track down an un-refinished "Date" dial and have it installed. Shouldn't be too hard, nor expensive.

Thank you for all the information. I managed to contact the seller who told me that the dial was refinished.....Even though I asked about this before purchasing and was told it was all original. I managed to return the watch....now the hunt begins for a new rolex..Thanks again!

Technically, the watch might be "all-original," meaning the parts are all original. Whether a dial is refinished is a different question. Still, a very misleading response from the seller, of course. Good news that you were able to return the watch.
