1016 gilt of 1966

Hello all,

I am in the market for a gilt 1016 and I will be going to Europe next week. I might be able to make a short detour to check out this 1016. These are all the photos I've from the dealer, do you think it is worth a short detour? I don't mind the stretches so much but I do want to understand if this dial is good. The price is under 18k. Any opinion is appreciated!

The lume looks weird to me, looks a little sloppy.

@roh123, forgive my ignorance but is it normal for the lume (such as at 11 and 12) to be overhanging the outline?

Not uncommon. Impossible for me to say if this been touched up. I like it.

9 is fairly wonky as well.

Looks like a couple possible paint chips around the edges @ 3 & 5 hour marks.

You seem to always question me when I have an opinion, do your research before questioning me...I've handled enough to notice it looks like a child used playdoh to relume... This is not factory original....

The lume looks absolutely awful. If you were to buy this, you’d have a hell of a hard time selling it with convincing a potential buyer that it came out of the factory looking like that.
The 11 o’clock marker alone is cringeworthy.

Not at all. I just have had lots of mid 60's gilt dials. Sometimes the lume is very messy. In this case the lume look ok to me. Both by color, structure and application.

Just so often on this board that members call out relumes without having any clue. If you know enough we can just agree to disagree in this case. I could be wrong but I would be happy to buy this watch. The chipped lacquer is a bigger concern.

Thank you for all of the replies! I definitely want to get myself a 1016. What do you guys think this should be worth?

The plan B would be settle for a matt dial for around 8-10k... which is not as charming (also I already have a Matt Dial Sub so might as well get something different for my 1016...) It just that a nice gilt dial 1016 with reasonable price seems hard to come by these days...

Be hard pressed to find a good matte dial for under 10k I think

Matte dial is 12-14 today, for respectable condition. $18K for nice gilt 1016 would be pretty inexpensive now-- I think you have figured out the reason for the price on this watch.

My observation is that some area of the gilt text is oxidized/patina to dark brown, but the lume is so white and have not any patina at all. That is very strange and weird. Not overall matching.
