Icon16 Whats a good starter AP?

Really fancy the 15400st black face. Just couple of questions. What's the most iconic? How's value if bought pre owned do they go soft? Or will they retain value similar to Rolex. Would you only buy one with box and papers or does it not matter with AP. Because with panerai I here it's a must. How much is a service? I've heard crazy numbers over the internet. Would like a true answer from an owner. Thanks

All the best,

Glenn Herwig

Wow a lot of questions there.

But from an 'iconic' standpoint grab a 15202 and like ANY brand it's all about buying right on the front side so the back doesn't hurt (as) much.

And yes box and papers.

If you buy new you'll have a three year warranty so fine.

After that $600 to $1k depending.

Good luck.

15400 is a nice option, but if you want Iconic - 15202 all day long

You mentioned Panerai - if you want something larger...The AP Diver is a great option as well.

As Paul stated, "buying right" on the way in will make all the difference.

For AP, Warranty and after sale service is really what sets them apart.

Welcome to the world of AP

Most iconic will be the Jumbo 40th anniversary Ref 15202

As for whether hold value or not, it depends on initial purchase price and the model. Service is more expensive than Rolex but not outrageously expensive. But of course, it depends if anything else is damaged.

15400 is a nice way in and a friendlier price than the 202.

A few may be missing one of the many questions from OP:

"What's the most iconic?"

The most iconic AP is the 15202, but if you buy from a trusted seller you can get a 15400 and the most iconic Rolex ( a no date SubC 114060) for the price of one 15202. For me, the 15202 was too much to spend so I went with the "starter AP" and couldn't be happier

Here are answers according to me. In the same order as your questions. 15202. Yes. No it will be worse. It matters to me. Thousands of dollars for service.

What Paul said...the only thing is if you like a larger dial you'll have to go for the 15400...regardless, it should be the blue dial as that is the iconic colour for AP and PP for that matter.

Happy shopping!

Depending on budget and taste I think the guys in the thread has nailed some good condenders.
Depending on budget and taste, 15400/15202/15710. If you are willing to spend a little more and wan't a ROO Chrono there are alot of nice alternatives, but the tend to take a little more hit if you buy new and flip after a few years.

If you want to stick to the iconic design, the 15202 is the way to go. I thought I wanted that for my first AP until I got the PP 5711 and I decided to go a different route with my first AP by getting the Millenary 4101. It's an incredible watch, and the level of finishing on the movement is about as good as it gets IMO, especially sub $20,000. I had to see one in person to appreciate it but I feel in love.

Just bought my first AP recently. Went with the ROO because I wanted something sporty. Like most said 15202 is a great and iconic size for the AP brand. You can get a 2010 AP ROO for around 13k if you want something more sporty.

What about the 15300? Not in the same league as 15202 but less in price.

I'd personally jump into a Perpetual Calendar AP RO. They are quite nice and very affordable considering the complication and brand here.

Can't go wrong with either the 15202 or 15400!
