Could have gone missing from a trauma center. And if the guy died, his family may not know the watch was missing or bother to file a report given all that's happened. And it'd make sense for the perp to try to get quick cash from a thrift shop in case someone ever did report it missing.

Awesome!

Now the question is what did you get your Mom for finding it?

Thrift stores work off donations and cannot purchase stuff to sell.

Thanks! It’s actually still her watch and she occasionally wears it.

Wow, this is unbelievable these days with internet and all online info that one can immediately use to find out the average price of anything. Selling that watch for this price is intriguing.
Reminds me of a similar situation my sister went through a couple of weeks ago when she was shopping for a Persian rag "She collects them" we entered a store she buys from regularly and she immediately said wow, look at this one... I'm not into these things but the rag was really beautiful, she asked the guy and he said its 2000$. My sister bought it and we left. She was so excited about it as to her, that rag was the most beautiful piece in her collection. One hour later, the owner of the shop called her "he was not in the shop when we were there" he apologized to her and told her the boy who sold her the rag made a mistake, the rag was actually 20000 USD.
We went back to the store and we gave the rag back, got a refund and my sister walked out the store a bit disappointed.
now I'm bringing this story in here to wonder, maybe the price of the watch was 10000 not 1000! :-)

Right, this story sounds most likely to be OP’s situation, that the employee(s) might’ve missed out a zero. However, what’s done is done. Getting a six-digit ref for that price, being lucky is an understatement...wow...

Little late for my 2 year bump since I haven't been as active on here lately. The watch is still here and doing great.

Awesome story! Once my second shot takes full effect, I’d to thrift store watch hunt. Sounds like fun!

Your mom still use it or passed it to you?

Still hers, but she's only worn it a handful of times since she found it. I'll wear it occasionally just so it's not sitting around for too long without a wind.
