Great news - talk about beating the odds. Congrats! I'm glad to hear you're getting your watch back. Make sure it's insured.

Glad to hear the good news. However, in the case that the pawn shop owner is not willingly giving your watch back, you may have to prove that the watch was stolen. Having the box, papers, even original receipt only proved that you bought the watch. Obviously the pawn shop got the watch by paying whoever sold it to them. Now I dont know about japan's law, but if a pawn shop has to prove that all items they buy are not stolen... they will be out of business. For all they know you could have sold your watch and then claimed it was stolen / lost. The police, I don't think they will proceed unless they have the theft suspect(s). They have indicated that the moment they did not seize the watch for you.

I'm really sorry you have to go through this. If only you knew the person(s) who were there when you lost watch, the police will have the suspect(s). But at this point this is simply what you said against what they said case. I hope I'm wrong.

Wow, that's awesome, glad to hear!!!

I assume some kind of inspection of the watch (have it opened up and authenticated) would be in place in case the theif was capable and removed valuable parts from it before selling it to the shop?

I have a hunch this pawn shop is not really legit since the cops hinted on "compensation".

I would have given you a 1 in 999 chance of ever seeing that watch again. I think you just hit the lottery. Congrats to you, sir.

I hope that all goes smoothly with the Pawn Shop, and that they "bite the bullet" and return it to you without hassle.

A letter of commendation is in order to the police department. Not sure if you could compensate the detective as an may be considered unethical as he was just doing his job. As far as the pawn shop......I would get that watch on my wrist and wish him a good day. Be glad the creep purchased your watch and the detective was doing his job.

Truly bloody amazing!
The pawnshop somehow got in the middle of this and now wants compensation??? unreal. After you had tried to give them a heads up… Unreal.
A big congrats to you. We don't get many such happy endings, enjoy.

I would wait on deciding whether to offer any cash to the pawn shop owner until you interact with him and find out if he indeed wants any compensation or not, and if so, how much. If he is a stand-up guy, I would give him a modest "reward." If not, then game on.

This^

Throwing some cash towards the pawn shop may be cheaper in the long run versus going the legal/court route. The BIG question is, how did the police find out about the watch being at the pawn shop?? Did the pawn shop call the police to notify them? If so, I'd be inclined to pay a reward for good will.

Tom, good to hear, I'm happy for you. However, I think it has very little to do with the first three,um,myths, but much more with the police doing their job, mathematical probability and good friends.
Good to see you got you baby back tho

Crazy story, I am not a pawn shop but I have to have a license for second hand purchases of jewelry or watches.

I have to get the drivers license and fingerprint of the seller as well as send a picture and info including serial #'s to the police. I then have to hold it for 35 days for it to clear. If it is stolen they will take it back and I wont receive any compensation as far as I know. I have never had one turn out to be stolen yet but that probably also has to do with the fact that I will send away ones that I think are fishy.

Not sure if it is the same in Japan but that's how it is in LA lol

Indeed it is the cost of doing business... in the US pawn shops and second hand dealers must list an item on the police website for 30 days before they are cleared to sell. If it comes up as stolen within those 30 days, they must hand it over to the police to return to the original owner. Basically they gamble on every purchase they make, unless the person selling the item can prove they are indeed original owner. This is why pawn shops offer so little on high ticket items... Just an FYI
