What's the dumbest move you've made while collecting.

Ok so this topic is painful, but hey this place is cheaper than therapy right?
What's the dumbest thing you've done in regards to your watches? Selling something you regretted, losing something, breaking something, or maybe not buying something? What's your biggest dumb mistake or biggest regret?

Mine is trading my first Rolex I ever owned, a TT datejust that was given to me by my dad. I know that's about as dumb as you can get, but I was young and thought I knew more than I did.

What's your biggest regret?

Buying a watch that didn't sing to me. Flipped it a few months later and a few dollars poorer.

There are so many.
1. Selling a theater made scuba recon band that was on my Sub, because it wasn't authentic Rolex.
2. Passing on my choice of Red Sub or Sea Dweller for $2,000
3. Passing on no crown subs for $4,000
4. Not coughing up 50k for a Milgauss diver.
5. Not buying a 1940s oversized Tudor chronograph for 400. I am guessing 44mm in size.
Never have seen one in photos even
I have seen similar Rolex for 100k.
6. Not bidding more on a President because the bezel looked funny. {It was a first generation model)
7. Passing on a President for scrap, because the dial had to be redone. Some annoying bright color. (It was a Stella dial)

For me it was dabbling heavy in Breitling and adding a corum.

Had I known what I know now I could have easily bought a precious metal Daytona or GMT

my dumbest move was selling the Omega Speedmaster Daydate Michael Schumacher special edition (39 mm). I sold it for $900 some 10 years ago.

this is the last picture that I have :(

Buying a solid gold rolex as my only watch when I was not ready to be a one way guy. Expensive lesson to learn but when you get the PM itch you have to scratch it I guess :).

Chaps

I have a house stuffed with things that I have collected over the years and I have never once done anything stupid and have never suffered from buyers or sellers remorse.

The methodology is simple - use your head, think things through and treat collecting like a business. Define your objectives and adhere to them.

Regards

Mick

Regrets I have a few...

- Not buying Rolex watches 20 years ago, blew too much $ on cars instead
- not buying a few more collectibles from the US when the A$ exchange to the USD was above parity
- letting go of the ExpII

The daftest thing is that i keep changing my mind, which is expensive, and makes me feel stupid.
My new 'rule' is to wait a month and see if I still feel the same.

- 17 years ago I had the chance to buy a mint Paul Newman Daytona from Watches of Switzerland in London, papers, box, the works. It was £28k. I didn't have £28k!! But now I really regret not trying to find it!!.... bought a £2k GMT II instead!!..... Unfortunately that's not gone up in value in the same way!!

- smacked my wrist against a metal chair whilst wearing my 16610lv and gouged the bezel. Yep! It's a flat 4. Never been so gutted!

Could have bought a Kermit for $4,500 in St.Thomas but girlfriend (wife now) said what do you need a $4,500 watch for plus our cruise ship was going to leave the dock in 30 minutes. I think about the lost opportunity all the time because my cousin got one from his wife as a wedding present 6 months later. Yes, still bitter about it to this day.

While we are at it...Hey AD, where's my white 116500? I put a $2,500 deposit in March and I still do not have my Daytona C

Ok back to bed

Passed on a mint omega Speedmaster Grail when waiting for a work contract renewal to come through

I really don't think that missing out (or selling) on a watch should be considered a dumb move.
It seems like a bad move because of the way the (vintage) market developed. But you never ever have any idea what will happen, else everyone would have bought those specific watches.

The exact same thing happened with all the old Porsche models ranging from 930/964/993 which have skyrocketed and weren't special at all 10-15 years ago. Or a Porsche Carrera GT which you could have had for what 250-350k and are now at close to a million.

The same thing happened with early Gibson Les Paul models and Fenders 20-30-40 years ago.

Selling my mint Kermit for £4000 - I didn't really want to at the time but the funds were needed for something else.

Buying what I can afford "now" instead of being patient and waiting until I could afford what I really wanted.
