The worst was not starting with Rolex.

I went through other brands, wasted money on cheap watches when I could have started with Rolex, Patek......

I don't have buyer's remorse, but I also made sure to shop by trying watches on rather than relying on internet reviews, product pictures and opinions.

Selling a MINT condition 1940's tear drop lug 18k rose gold Jaeger for $800. That one haunts me.

I have made several. I bought a Franck Muller when I wanted a Rolex Sub 12 years ago. I then bought a Breitling when my wife wanted me to get a Rolex 9 years ago. Finally, I wanted a 15300 AP with a blue dial and did not buy one when they were still being made by AP.

I will bet I have missed some other dumb moves made by me in the past.

Two big ones come to mind:
1. Few years back before I knew about the TRF forum. I asked for my dad's old 16014. I thought I would be a good son by getting it serviced. My dad had never serviced it. I brought it to RSC, didn't know anything and they swapped out the hands. Luckily, they didn't swap out the linen dial. Sigh...

2. Flipped my first Rolex - 116234

Lesson learned.

All my Rolex deals were good, I made some money and lost some but always walked away happy.

A few years ago I did not buy two yellow gold Rolex Day-Dates ($4K each) from the person who inherited them simply because I had not adjusted to the idea of buying pre-owned watches. They only needed to be serviced.

Buying a knock-off Planet Ocean and then waiting so long to replace it with a real one. Second was buying too many Invictas prior to buying my SMP Bond. Third was selling my first Rolex because it was "entry level."

Not starting with Rolex. Bought a Tag first (even though I could have afforded Rolex) then a Breitling, then moved to Rolex.

I consider it a mistake that I bought a Kermit as an investment piece. It's a complete set in excellent condition, and it just sits in the safe. I don't want to wear it and put scratches on it. What a shame to have such a nice watch and never wear it.

I know Now I pay the price and buy what I really want, as soon as the right example shows up. I've been penny smart and dollar dumb, too many times. Now I'm looking to flip (and loose a tone of money on) a bunch of watches I bought instead of that LV.

I think it's great that most of the regrets here are for NOT buying a watch, rather than buying a stinker.

I regret so many years of not wearing a Rolex, really. I could have, just avoided the cost. I underestimated how versatile it is, and how much I would enjoy wearing it.

Found this forum and follow it. It must have cost me something close to what I paid for my first house since I started.

Buying watches as they came up, even though it wasn't exactly what I was looking for.

I did a quicksale on craigslist where I got rid of 4 watches (low end). I wish I had one of of those watches back, and that one watch would have cost more than what I sold the lot for if I got it again today.

Also bought a sub at bobswatches for $5,400 plus tax where I could have gotten it on a forum for around $4,700.

Mine was trading a 1973 Omega Speedmaster Professional which I won at a cards game in Madrid. The watch was new, box, papers, etc. I used that watch for about five very memorable years and then was stupid enough to trade it for a 1949 Rolex Oyster with gold-plated case.

I still have the Rolex Oyster, recently had it fully serviced, case and hands are great, it works perfectly, but the case is in pretty bad shape. I miss the Speedmaster for the great years it spent on my wrist.

Evidently, you can get one on eBay for that. It just happens to be fake.

Turning down the offer to buy a Lange Langematik Anniversary that's now worth 3x what it was offered to me for.

Agree. There was a time when Lange watches were a bargain as compared to today's prices.

Buying this 1940s Lemania chrono. Its beautiful, but not very practical for frequent wear since its YG and expensive to service if something goes. I have decided to keep it as my dress watch, but don't really use it much. Would take way too much of a $ loss if I sold it.

The attraction to a gold Day-Date is hard to resist...

I felt too self-consious about wearing it around my clients and employees. Ended up selling it for a 15202.

Lesson learned!
