Need a little advice...

I was surprised to see that my six year old sub has stopped working... I some how thought these Rolex watches were invisible to problems... Oh well...

Any way I dropped it off at my AD to get it fixed. They are mailing it to Dallas to a Rolex service center. She told me while it is there that they would polish it. This watch is my daily, especially for work. It has light scratches on it. I told her not to polish the watch because of what I have read here on TRF... But now I’m second guessing this...

Would you have them polish it or not? And why?

Thanks in advance.

P.S. I still love this sub as much as I did the day I got it... Just has that classic good looks!

For a modern Sub, I'd have them polish it. It'll come back looking as good as the day you got it.

Do you like the scratches ? If not, have it refinished.

Simple as that.

For a modern Sub I may have them polish the watch...depends on if you like the wear or not. I would however send it directly to the RSC myself, make sure that if you don’t want it polished to include very specific instructions with the watch.

Since you use it for work as a daily, I would not have it polished if it were me. Your scratches are very light and the watch overall still looks great. If you did have it polished, I am thinking that you might be a little more paranoid about it afterwards. Maybe wait a few more years until it has more scratches and looks a bit worse?....Then have it polished? I'm no expert, but from the discussions here on TRF, the less polishings a watch has gone through during its lifetime, the better?

The only reason I told them to hold off on the polish because I seem to remember other TRF members frowning on watches that had been polished...

I am thinking now I might just have them polish it... Get more scratches as I use it and in 6-10 years when it goes back in for service let them polish it again.

Besides the scratches being gone, does the metal look different, ie can you see swirls or polish marks on the watch or does it look new as it would from the factory?

I’d totally have it refinished. You won’t notice any difference other than the scratches will be gone and the watch will look brand new.

Every singe pre owned modern watch sold by trusted sellers on here are “polished”. And none of them is “ruined”.

Have no fear RSC will do it right.

Polish....Rolex service knows what they're doing. They won't over-polish and you won't be able to tell......it will look brand new.

Curious....what stopped working?......the winding aspect?

I'd get it polished. If anyone knew how to keep the case edges crisp it would be Rolex.

I would absolutely get this polished. It will come back looking brand spanking new. Most people are referring to vintage pieces, not new ones. I happen to like my watch is shiny looking and new looking.

I’m gong against the grain here ... I prefer no polish, unless it’s a mark I jus5 can’t live with. Yours looks fine to me

polish it....listen to your own opinion and not some strangers online :) . RSC is professional at polishing...you and many others won't notice the difference.

I don't think any of us will be around to see modern Submariner to become vintage. :) .

FYI, don't listen to me :)

I would never again have a watch polished by Rolex or anyone else. They don't look the same and they don't look new, they just look polished. There's a reason that the vintage market loves an original condition watch, unpolished, with scratches and dents, etc. and it's because the case, bezel, crown and bracelet retain their original shape. Once you polish you can't un-polish.

Only a light polish is required but perhaps leave if you liken scratches to your personal history. If you want it looking new it can be done. I'm generally anti polish but since you're using as intended service and polish as intended. It's a modern Sub!

I would definetely poilish it. The problem with poilishing and over polishing is that people tend to service their watches in non-official service centers to save some money. The issue is that the majority of jewellers will not even take the watch appart in order to polish it and that's where the majority of the problems occur. My AD in Munich told me that the Supercase is goos for 10 polishing cicles more or less. He suggested that i should do that every 10 years or so, that's a 100 years for me, good enough :)

I don't see any issue with a modern Rolex being polished if done professionaly.

Looks like it's your beater.

Polish it now and it will look the same in 6 years.

I'm 50/50 on this question.

No looks fine other than some very minor hairline scratches. I really think the scuffs and scratches along the way are part of the watches patina the same as the dial. I will have mine refinished when I pass them along to my kids.

Kinda thinking the same. Was considering it on my Tudor Sub but decided against it. It has/adds character and best left on its current original condition...again, just my opinion.

On a modern reference I would have it lightly polished!

A modern six digit sub can withstand several polishings at RSC over its lifetime. Polish it if you want to.

Can someone define the year and ages they deem to be ‘vintage’ and ‘modern’ please?
