Never realized before but the color hue of the bezel looks a lot like the Tudor GMT.

Just a beginner here, but I really like the crazing on the insert. At least I think I saw some crazing over the numbers.

Yes, cleaning the glass proved worthwhile!

Protecting the bezel with appropriate tape, the existing glass was rubbed with abrasives of increasing fineness:

The result is that a watch I already found one of the most beautiful in my collection became only better again:

An imperfect restoration of the glass, but a large improvement! For the avoidance of doubt, the wrist model here is not Ms. Blackman.

My conviction that the bezel insert was correct seems to be the unanimous conclusion of all; no doubt there.

My conviction that the dial had been relumed does seem to be in question. A good number of owners and dealers have contacted me publicly and privately to say that this is, in fact, Geneva-original lume and exactly what they would expect. One is always learning and I could not be happier than to have been wrong in this instance!

I just noticed the white seconds hand - is that something they did on the earlier models only?

Hi IronRicecBowl like most things I think it depended on the mood of the Rolex technicians at the time, my 3rd period 1958 however also has a white lollipop second hand. Regards

Great 6542 ! Don't think that the dial has been relumed.

Back to the insert: You should check with a geiger counter if there is radioactivity. Should be no problem to remove the complete bezel and check it....

Hard to imagine that there are no cracks, when there is radioactivity.

There are some bakelite inserts out there, that do not show radioactivity. Those inserts are in really good condition. Maybe they are filled with tritium. Maybe there was a batch produced in the 60´s and tritium was used to fill ?? I think nobody knows this exactly....

Great read! Congrats. Such a lovely piece, a wonderful example of the original GMT. I am also always learning something from the community.

Isn’t that a service bezel though?

Were u referring to the watch bought by Haywood, or the one in post#47? The Bakelite in the original post looks original, but the latter looks like tritium insert.

I blame it on autoconnect.

I now have no doubt whatsoever that the bezel in my watch, shown in the first post, is a correct and original Bakelite...

...making this one of the most enjoyed watches in my collection. The richness of the various colours is a delight.

Both.

But Haywood’s. It’s more of a question than an assertion but all the ones I have seen so far have the red / blue dividing line on the 18 inside the 8.

Are there photos of others?

On my 6542 the line sits above the 18 as well. And I am positive that mine is not a repo. I purchased it before they made repo's.

Am I missing something? I do not see any red text on this GMT. It all looks all gilt to me.
