"Whenever Steve travelled, it was always with a six-pack of beer in a cooler." Steve had bought his 57 Ford pickup from a migrant farm worker, and acquired a number of vehicles in similar circumstances, flagging down the driver for an on-the-spot roadside deal. [Barbara McQueen]

I have to say I think this is the best post I have ever read. So great... However if that is how he acquired his truck it makes one wonder how did he acquire his 5512?

Pretty sure in Montana. Can’t say where, but I saw the pic featured in an article about people of note who’ve lived in Montana

is that a 1665 he's wearing there? I'm sure I can see a little glint of orange. It's also refreshing to see a guy taking pride in colour-coordinating his beer and his truck :-)

I'm always amused by the description of Steve McQueen as the king of cool. He certainly had that screen persona. And I loved his acting and the movie characters he developed as only he could. But in reality the "king of cool" was the most insecure actor to grace the big screen.

1957 Jaguar XK SS

No watch or Steve McQueen in the picture, however the Jaguar in the picture was rumored to have previously belonged to Steve McQueen. The Honda s2000 previously belonged to me (sold it a number of years ago). I did have the privilege of driving the '57 XK SS (although only about 30 feet), in order to get my car out. Picture taken in 2007, Salida, CO during the Colorado Grand Rally.

I can think of a few reasons I'd want to be buying my cars in roadside, cash deals & laying low had I been friends with Sharon Tate, had Jay Sebring, my friend, cutting my hair & had nearly been at Polanski's on the big night.

The notion that he drank beer while driving is not cool at all. Sorry guys. Did I misunderstand? I know about his arrest in Alaska for this very crime.

Funny that in all likelihood, the truck really wasn't considered cool when it was owned by the no-doubt struggling migrant worker. SM acquires it with the wad of notes in his back pocket and it immediately assumes shabby chic status. Swigging [albeit gnat's pi$$] beer behind the wheel isn't recommended. Not going to a barber for a few years wasn't his best style move, either.
