What is Patek community's opinion on Lange Datograph (39mm version ref 403.032, and not the newer Up/Down)?

This is an intermediate step towards a PP chronograph (including my dream 5170P) which are all in a much higher price range considering that I can get this mint Datograph (from 2013) for half the price of any PP chronograph.

I prefer the up down but i put the dato generally on a higher level than a Patek chrono. Maybe the 1815 chrono as an intermediate step on the way to a Patek. The movements are almost identical minus the date but to me the Dato is the most impressive of the ALS chronographs

to me its

Dato> 5170>1815 chrono

I prefer Up/Down as well but it is at a much higher price on the preowned market. At the same time I like the date window on the Dato comparing to 1815

at this price level if you prefer the up/down i would either hold out for that or hold out for the 5170. I wouldn't by a second choice watch even if its a good deal as its still a ton of cash.

Good point. At the same time I do like the old Dato enough to take it at this price level, but wanted to hear if there are some warnings that I should be aware of regarding this reference.

Original 39mm much preferable over the up down

5070 > 39mm dato > 5170 > 1815 chrono > 41mm dato

my choice is the 39mm black dial in rose, aka dufourograph!

Great watch for the price. Only issue for me was getting the right fit. Platinum case with 13mm thickness makes it top heavy.

Have you ever tried one on? I can tell you as someone who has owned both the 39mm Dato is a very thick watch for the size. It is amazing with amazing movement but on the wrist it is like a little hockey puck. The proportions are just off IMHO despite being such an iconic and cool watch. Again I loved the watch overall but if it were a few mm's thinner and maybe 1mm larger it would be perfectly proportioned like the 5170.

Inexpensive for what you get and basically unwearable. I tried very hard with two different Datos, nice to look at in the watch box though.

Regarding the order of preference posted above, the new RG 1815 chrono released at SIHH this year has be rethinking this model. Such a gorgeous piece, and solves all wearability issues as well.

this is gorgeous...as is the 5170 in same dial/case configuration.

Very true, the rg 5170 is amazing. My preference is slightly edged towards this new 1815 because of the white numbers on the dial, as the rg breguet numerals on the patek don't look as good to me. For a 5170, I'd go with the G.

wish the had used applied numerals on the 1815. that would clinch it for me.
