Winding vintage Rolex
I recently purchased a 1937 vintage rolex. I noticed that when I'm winding it, about every 10th turn it makes a noise. I'm not sure if this is some sort of a release mechanism or an internal problem with the watch. Does anyone else notice this type of noise?
Also, how do you know how much you should wind it? I wound it at 12 -midnight last night, and I looked at it this morning and it stopped at 8 AM. Shouldn't the winding last all day? |

You should get more than 8 hrs. You might have a broken main spring. Inexpensive fix.

You wind a manual winding watch until the resistance is so strong it can't be wound further. It sounds like there is an issue with your watch at the moment as per above. Power reserve should be far longer than 8h even on a 30's watch.

Not sure.... let me hear it again.
As mentioned, you wind a manual wind watch until it stops winding. If it winds and winds without a solid stop, it is likely a broken mainspring or it has become detached.

The one I purchased is #Rolex75 on this page:
http://www.darlor-watch.com/rolex_watches_4.html I definitely didn't come to the point where it stopped letting me wind. I didn't know what point I should stop. Probably wound it for about 30 seconds, maybe 20 seconds. Not sure. I felt increasing resistance, but nothing substantial. Def no hard stop. |

Winding vintage Rolex
Hi , I’m not familiar with that period of watch but it could possibly be the overwinding clutch releasing tension on the spring ? You can hear and feel a whirring when it operates correctly . My 6542 does it after about 10 winds when I very occasionally feel the need to wind it even though it probably doesn’t need it. Just thinking:

Definitely sounds like a broken mainspring. My 1965 Omega Speedmaster Professional did exactly the same thing a few years back and it was nothing worse than a broken mainspring.

Is a broken mainspring easy to fix? Unfortunately, due to its age, I've heard that it's difficult to find parts for this watch.
If I leave it go and don't fix it, could the mainspring damage other internal components? I've been trying to find a good rolex watchmaker in New England, but haven't had much luck. There's some people in Boston who sounded like they might work on a watch this old. European Watch Company on Newbury Street. |

This is the inside of the watch, but I'm not sure if that tells you anything:

This is the watch running. You can see a little funkiness going on with the second hand:

Contact Tommy Taylor, R.W.T. on the forum. RolexWatchTime@att.net. He should be able to help with your vintage watch.
