Calatrava appreciation thread

This forum seems to be somewhat Nautilus/Aquanaut-centric in my opinion.

But I have always considered the Calatrava range to be the best representation of PP (that is not to say the others are not iconic). It's a shame that not as many Calatravas are shared cf. Nautilus/Aquanaut/Complications in this forum.

Please show us your Calatrava's gents (and ladies)!

Recently I tried to buy back my old 5127R (photo above) the owner said that the crystal had a small crack on it which you could hardly see. No probes I thought as a service would sort it out.
What was the rest of the watch like?
No problems came back his reply the case looks great.
Send me some photos I ask.

Then I happen to send one of the photos to an authorised dealer and they highlighted the following concerns!

I discussed the photo and the issues raised but the owner wasn't interested!

The Calatrava is a great collection and the ultimate dress watch in my opinion! I'm saving up to get myself one of these someday now that my company just became an official Patek Philippe AD. I've always liked the classic and timeless look of the 5119 but am also intrigued by the 6000.

This is the 5565A.

An interesting tidbit I realized after I purchased this watch - a SS tang buckle is quite rare as most Patek dress watches are precious metal.

I saw pictures of a guy who bought the Calatrava 7200R which is a ladies reference. He replaced the grey-ish strap for a dark brown one and now it's perfectly fine to wear as a gentleman's Calatrava. I think I like it more than any other Calatrava, plus you get the micro rotor.

The 5196P is an interesting watch as it is reminiscent of Ref. 96 watches with Breguet hands from the 1940s-50s. I agree that a clear caseback would have been nice. Although I haven't opened up the caseback to see the movement, some say the movement is a bit small for this watch.

Here are some Breguet hour markers on the 5153G-012. It is similar to the previous 5053, which had the date window at the 6 o'clock position.

The cal 215 has been around a long time and is more appropriately sized for a 32-33mm case. IMO it would look ridiculously tiny viewed thru a sapphire caseback were the 5196 so equipped. The sub seconds register is moved closer to the center to accommodate the size mismatch and just seems a bit off. The dial of the 5196P hides it better than the other versions though.

If there is one single piece from all those I've owned and sold/traded in the past that I would now buy back without any hesitation, this would be it.

With fellow TRF member "Orangedial17" and his 5712R during one of our Singapore meetups.

I've heard from friends it's too boring, I've heard from other H.O. brand boutique managers that it's "too oldish" and too classical, etc.

It may not have an open back, it may not have moon or perpetual complications, but what I know is that it's a design that was timeless and elegant nearly 100 years back when it was released, and another 100 years down the line it will be as elegant and timeless as it is now.

It's versatile, it's a classic, it fits so nice on the wrist, it's one of the more reasonably priced PPs to own, it's handwound, mine kept terrific timekeeping, it comes with a simple yet classy pin buckle, its case dia. is where a man's watch should more-or-less be (37.2mm), etc.

I don't get it, you take issue with reflections?

That was my initial thoughts.
Though the owner had suggested on another forum that the watch and the box had been dropped by a gray dealer while examining it and that they had also cracked the crystal.
So I sent the photos to 2 UK authorised dealers one being the Patek Salon. And both made the same observation, that the case had been damaged. The Salon even offered to examine the watch if the owner sent it to them.
Unfortunately he refused point blank which heightened my concerns. Later that day he informed me that he had sold the watch for the same price that I had offered him.
