How badly priced is this 1680?

I know it's high at $12k USD asking price considering condition. How off the mark do you all think it is?

I think that watch has been discussed here before. I remember the finish loss at the bottom of the dial. Let me look for the thread...

Update, found the thread and its a different watch. Price seems high to me

I was told by another buddy of mine with much more knowledge about vintage rolexes that it was an $8k watch due to dial and bezel. Is he nuts?

Yes, he's nuts. Sorta. The bezel looks fine to me with a great ghost insert, though it is a service one. Yes, the dial chipping is pretty crapping considering most of the value is in the dial. That being said, its still a genuine red and worth around $10k in my opinion.

Depends on other factors as well. Year? Service? Original bracelet? Crown? Insert? Box and papers? $15k give or take. Maybe more.

8.5 to 9 at best. Dial is a killer.....i would pass. They say the condition of your first red is not important....the condition of your second red is. Save yourself the hassle. Get the right one first. Avoid this one. Shitty dial will grate one you.

The defect of the dial is too obvious...

IMHO ff mark 4 or 5 dial:

Shitty red (hand, case, dial, insert issues) 7.5 - 9k
Nice red (polished, orig hands, non orig insert) 9 to 11k
Unmolested red 12 to 15k
Nice red with papers and box 14.5 to 16k
Nice red with papers, box, anchor, etc. 15 to 17k
Unmolested red with full set 18 to 22k

I agree top to bottom with this. Problem is, there's a bit of a hysteria with red Subs nowadays. Sellers seem to be asking crazy money, even for mediocre examples, although they can "ask" whatever they want, of course.

Here is a formula that might work for you in determining the value. Buy the watch at say...$12,000. Add a correct bezel insert...$1000...add a correct dial...$$6,000. Add $7,000 to the $12,000 purchase price and you have $19,000 in the watch to get it in decent condition. Value the take-out dial at $4,000, sell it, and you have $15000 in the watch. Now decide if it is worth $12,000 in its current condition. Nice Mark IV and Mark Vs sell for around $14,000 - predicated on the condition and originality.

The problem I see is that everyone and anyone spending five figures for a vintage Rolex Sub, GMT etc want one without issues if they are paying full, or close to, retail prices.

Makes perfect sense. Way too much effort. I'm still on the hunt . . .

I just spent some additional time studying this Craig's List 1680 and I think you might be correct about the dial. It might explain some of the poor quality photos.

Sorry guys but I think the dial is false / repainted... value of zero .
This 1680 in my opinion has a few things right and it is in very poor condition
