Visited Tulum a couple of years ago and went with the Villa option, as we have with other coastal areas of Mexico, over the years.
This worked well for us. https://www.vrbo.com/28874?k_clickid...Fdu1wAod4SAF1Q One of the agencies we have used with a great variety of villas in the Tulum / Akumal area http://www.akumal-villas.com 1 hour drive south of Cancun with rental car. Great supermarket for shopping which you can do yourself or have the host do it for you. Easy access to great local sights, restaurants and attractions. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Tulum is amazing. I'd highly recommend thinking of it as a "beach" as well, not just ruins, so bring beach wear and towels.

We just returned from a couples trip about two weeks ago. Tulum was one of the places we visited. Stayed at an all inclusive about an hour closer to Cancun called Moon Palace. Hotels in Tulum seemed to be quite a bit less expensive. The beach and ruins were amazing although it was extremely warm and humid that day.

Been to the area several times. We prefer the Hard Rock in Riviera Maya. Need to branch out but always afraid to rent car/house in Mexico.

tulum is nice. was there 4 years ago.
ensure you bring refillable canteens as there's a trash ban on the historic site tours when i was there. hard to find water if you go on tours. |

It's a huge yoga spot, so I've been many times.
But it's been years. I don't know the latest and greatest, or even if it's been further developed. Last time I was there it was very rustic where we stayed. Sea water showers, no AC, etc. I loved it, bit there are places with a bit more accommodation. Check the typical travel sites to find the place for you. But keep in mind, it's not a party place. You will see stars and clear blue waters, but not much to do. Not much of a kids place imho. But incredible. And magic waits if that's what you are looking for. I followed a baby sea turtle into the water and swam with it, until I could no longer see it. It was one of the best moments of my life.

Tulum is a beautiful place. I went there a few years ago before it was popular. My wife and stayed in a palapa on the beach. We had the entire beach to ourselves.
If you are renting a car,I would highly recommend it, then I would also look into visiting some of the cenotes around the area. I went cave diving at a few of them and it was awesome. Since I wear contact lenses it was nice to clear my mask without the sea water stinging my eyes. The stalactites and stalagmites were very cool to see underwater. My wife had fun snorkeling in the cenotes while I was diving. Also check out Coba. We also stayed in Akumal and I would say that is more kid friendly of a location. Akumal had a lot of turtles that we swam around in Akumal bay. Have a good trip. |

I've never stayed near Tulum but there are a number of nice places in Cancun and you can always rent a car and drive the one hour to see the ruins. My wife and I did this many years ago, back when you could still walk through and explore the entire site.
