How is the watch supposed to sit?

I got a new IWC watch and I have never had a watch that has a strap with the butterfly clasp. How is the watch supposed to rest on the table?

as it breaks in, you should be able to rest it as in pic #2

(this is why i never liked butterfly buckles.)

Hello,

Yeah, same here. I like a normal pin buckle more.
So it should be like #2 right? I thought #1 would put too much pressure on a side of the watch so couldn't be good for the watch.. am I right in this point? Thanks.

theres a leather conditioner you can buy (search googles) which apparently softens the leather faster.

you can also just shower with it until it gets a natural crease.

the shell cordovan on the Nomos would not have this problem as its a more subtle leather and natural color.

Resting position in the first pic is fine. I prefer the deployment clasp on leather because of less wear/tear than a pin buckle.

Water and fine leather aren't a good match. You'll get some undesirable side effects.

Wearing it is the best approach to breaking it in right. Use a leather conditioner like Bick 4 periodically to maintain the strap.

respectfully, water and fine leather are just fine. many dive watches come and came with quality leather bands (panerai?). just rinse with fresh water after chlorine and or salt water exposure.

the cheap hides with poor dye's are the ones that stink and crack.

I think you have that backwards. My combat boots were cheap leather and fine getting wet. My John Lobb's are fine leather and don't do well with water. Leather loves oils and loathes water. Restoring the oils is the purpose of the conditioners.

If the strap was designed to be wet, getting it wet is no issue. But if it's a fine leather dress strap, it should be cared for as fine leather.

Of course, if you want the strap to look " broken in", getting it wet will weather it much more quickly than simply wearing it.

I have a Frederique Constant with a deployant clasp and I lay mine as you did in the upper picture. I never gave it any thought until now.

Like the top picture, but put it crown down. In time you'll build up a series of little scratches on the side of the case at 9 o'clock if you rest it crown up.
