Jeff, that is a fine looking Panerai! Yes, it is big, but does not seem too big on your wrist. Enjoy! Cheers, Bill P.

I'd never claim one is better than the other... I'm simply not educated enough. What makes you think the Rolex movement and overall quality is better than Panerai? I understand the Rolex movement is made "in house", which is cool, but does that necessarily make it better?

Rolex is a very good quality watch overall, but I am not sure that the movement in the Rolex is "better" and "higher quality all around" than the Panerai. I think the base movement in many Panerai models still is ETA, but I believe they are changing and creating their own movements and already have at least one model featuring their own. Still, I am not sure a sweeping claim of Rolex superiority is warranted. ETA movements are tested, solid, and reliable. Many manufacturers have been using them as a base until Swatch announced their decision to no longer sell movements outside their group. So although there is again a trend toward in-house movements, this is not because ETA movements are in any way inferior, but because legally they will soon be unavailable. The cost of developing a new movement these days is often around $1,000,000.00, which is not a trivial amount of money. Because of this and because a great many mechanical watch manufacturers shut their doors during the quartz revolution, when they opened their shops again, they often chose not to pay the cost of reviving their own in-house movement production because ETA movements were proven and available for purchase. Now that Swatch has changed their policy on this, manufacturers are again working to recreate or create their own in-house designed movements.

You're quite welcome. As an aside, I started wearing the Panerai more once I bought a bigger strap. It looks better with the watch, and helps distribute the weight nicely.

Panerai boxes are DEFINITELY better, you can't argue that! Check out this pic I just grabbed from Paneristi.com.

I tried on a Panerai Marine yesterday, 44mm, I believe. It was awesome. Very nice feel. It was 1 of only 2000 made. Took 6 mos. to get it to the store. The dealer couldn't get in touch with the guy that ordered it. Said I could have it if I wanted it. I don't need a 4th watch...but I am tempted. Came with a Croc. strap and a rubber one. Very nice.

GB,
Do you remember which model you tried on?
None of "need" the second, third , fourth or..... watch. BUt is sure if fun
Just an FYI.
I was at the AD on Sunday (less than 2 full days ago), they have sold 5 Panerai, and holds on two more.
They fly off the shelves, if you want it, act quickly

I think it was Marine or Marina. It came in a very nice wooden box with 2 tools and a rubber strap. It was very nice. I've got 2 Subs and a Breitling Emergency. This had a completely different look and feel. The lume glowed bright in the middle of the day. I think it had a 24 hour dial. I looked at and tried on so many, I may be wrong about the 24-hour dial.

The older I get, the smaller my watches look and the harder it is for me to tell read the dial at a glance. It's not as if I'm going blind, but at age 50 my eyesight certainly isn't what it used to be, especially at close range. So in my case, whether it's fashionable or not, when it comes to watches bigger is better.

I tried on a 44.2 mm Glashutte Original Senator Navigator watch a few weeks ago and fell in love with how easy it was to read. The big Arabic numerals certainly helped, too.

A bigger watch is in my future.

According to an article I read in a watch magazine recently, Panerai has now developed three in-house movements. Onward and upward, as they say.

King of old school. I have a 1957 DD. The 2008 DD uses the same case. It's time to make a 42mm DD instead of 36mm. Rolex needs to stop living on its name and update. Good thing the Daytona is going 42mm. I love the Panerai style. This is just my opinion.

Oh, I don't believe it's just your opinion

The Datejust is the watch that started me down the road to WISdom. I really want to buy one, but there is NO chance until it becomes at least a 40mm.
That being said, the next watch on my list is the PAM 177 or 88. Well, who am I kidding the next two watches on my list are the 177 and 88. Now I just have to decide which one is first

Yes, me too. Suddenly I am interested in watches that have big dates, extra legible dial layouts and good to excellent lume too. I haven't been looking too much at Panerai because I have assumed they would be too large for my wrist, but i am going to try one on the next time I have a few moments to do so. Panerai though has a nice readable design, so I will need to take a look at this brand. They certainly have a loud cheering section and this is usually a good sign.

Fox Gems in Seattle usually has a fair selection of Panerai.
It doesn't hurt to drop by and try a few one.
Vancouver just received a bundle of them, so I am guessing Fox may have recieved some this week also.

I can think of a few watch companies that will argue that blanket statement. Patek makes a decent cuckoo clock. If you are saying in your opinion then good on ya, if not I feel for ya.

Launch Mini: I was thinking about visiting Fox this month to see if Panerai wears well on me. You have a very nice collection, obviously you are a fan. Glad to hear Fox usually has Panerai in stock. I want to look at the #00024 (Luminor Submersible) if they have one.

Hammer,
Long story, but the condensed version....
Hammer is the nickname of a long time Paneristi. Gave his heart & soul to the Risti communitly. A while back, he broke his back in a water sport accident and is going through a long recovery ( parapalegic ).
The community had thrown a ton of support his way, the Hammer is representative now of support for him.

According to my warranty card, Fox Gems is where my PAM was originally purchased. I was wondering just a few weeks ago where Fox Gems is located. Seattle... such a great city!

As it so happens, Fox Gems is where I went to look at Glashütte Original watches last month. Unfortunately for me, Fox is the closest GO AD to Portland, about 175 miles away. It is in the very heart of downtown Seattle, which is a huge metropolis compared to little ol' Portland.

I didn't bother to look at their Panerais though because my local Rolex AD also doubles as my local Panerai AD. I can see them any time (and frequently do).

Haakon, since we share an interest in big dates, extra legible dial layouts and good to excellent lume you may also want to check out the Glashütte Original Navigator while you're at Fox. The Navigator is all of those things. It comes in two models, one with a standard dial layout and date and the other with a double dial layout and no date:

Navigator Panorama Date

And the Navigator

These are big watches, at 44mm wide/14mm high, and easy to read with outstanding lume (note how the lume is applied only to the even numbers, which I think is very cool).

The only two drawbacks, for me, are the leather strap and solid caseback. I prefer SS bracelets, and although all other GO models come with a sapphire crystal case back so you can see their highly finished movements at work, GO wanted to be true to its German Luftwaffe pilots watch heritage for the Navigators.

I have heard that GO may start providing optional sapphire casebacks for the Navigators but who knows when and if that will happen.

If you want the date feature, be prepared to pay almost $3K for it. List price for the Navigator is $5,800; the Navigator Panorama Date is $8,500. Discounts are negotiable.

I've got a GO GMT on order with no delivery date in sight. One of these days I may just cancel it and get a Navigator instead.

Downing:

Thank you, I have been looking at GO, especially the Sport Evolution, but I will have to consider the Navigator with Date as well as I see it has very strong lume. I have been down to Fox but they never have had much in the way of inventory for GO when I have been there. I have seen Panerai but have not tried one on. I do like Ulysse Nardin though and have been tempted several times, but they have said they will not budge off full price. I have been to their shows a couple of times too. Also, they now have Audemars Piguet, which is a brand I like. Thank you for the tips, I appreciate them. I think I will visit sometime this month, if I get time.
